I want to burn 2 .avi files as a dvd. Which I have done many times but have never had this problem. After adding files i get a square with an X thru it instead of a regular preview thumbnail of the movie(see below).
I also noticed that when trying to preview .avi file there is no picture just a black screen but I can hear it just fine(see pic below). Dont know if im missing codec or what. I am using Nero 8.3.2.1

The only thing I can suggest is that you have yourself a BAD download, it does happen from time to time with some sites.

You could try downloading something like VLC and see if it recognizes the files.

I've had a similar thing but with .mov files. It seems to be related to codecs for the specific video format. The video file just wont play at all in Nero Vision, I installed Quicktime Alternative and that worked for me with my .mov file problem.

I'd say Rotary's the expert for Nero and such in these forums, probably codec's too but I totally agree with him about it being a codec problem. When Nero shows that sort of thing in the pic you posted it's generally unrelated to the video file itself being corrupt, it means I think that NeroVision can't gather the information for converting the file, Rotary could probably explain it better but it if a video file is corrupted it wouldn't play properly in various media players, if it does then you need to look for the codec's Nero Vision or even similar programs need to process the file to convert it to a DVD compliant format. Basically whatever file type it is that's showing that needs a certain codec for it to work with Nero Vision, I find the 2 common file types that have this problem are .mov files and .wmv files and probably RealPlayer files as well.

However rtginc's and gwendolin's response or questions were good because it helped weed out whether it was a corrupt download. I guess I'm really trying too hard to not upset any members here with my ramblings, but that's just me. But then again they've brought more to this thread than me so just consider me a forum hippie(just joking, I've been known to have my fair share of fights on forums).

thx for the nice comments but there are plenty of nero heads in here better than me i just read alot of threads and pick up on a few things.

could just be nero doesnt like the file even? maybe nero has got a currupt file in the program, try a clean uninstall with the clean tool from nero site and fresh install maybe.

try dvd flick its free for a test...

for avi i would choose convertxtodvd and TFM/CCE over nero, just my personal choice though.

i use nero for other things...

Well since Nero 8 is such an awesome package I use it generally for all my CD and DVD needs. The reason I prefer Nero Vision over similar programs that do the same thing is it has the option of setting the priority for how much CPU it takes up, so I usually set it to Very Low and then I can do other stuff properly at the same time, if I had a faster computer that wouldn't be an issue but my computer is 4 years old and I have no idea when I plan to upgrade, maybe next year sometime. Basically wanna get a better graphics card, more RAM and a bigger power supply. My hardrive is only 40GB so I often need to use Nero to clear up space on my hardrive.
I'm tempted to go back to v.7 cos 8 seems kind of bloated and doesn't offer much more than its previous version but for now I'll stick with it.

I was wondering what is the best codec pack to install to cover as many video types? Also does having more than one cause conflicts much?

    Hey movielver,
I read your post and I read that yo often use nero to clear up space in your hard drive.Do you mean to get data on DVD or CD or you really mean to use nero as a formatting tool.If so please tell how you do that with nero.

I meant the former, however I generally use DVDs rather than CDs because they have much more space on them.
I'm not sure what you mean by formatting to clear space but as far as I know Nero doesn't do anything like that.
