    Gidday,

New to this forum & DVD burning game.

I have had success with Xcopy XPress & am wanting to try some other software.

I have obtained Copytodvd which uses DeCrypyer or DVDshrink.

This seesm to be a successful combo used on this forum.

I have read here that Shrink doesnt remove macrovision etc, so then is only a compression tool?? is that right.

hence I need to first use Decrypter & then run Shrink & then burn. Is that correct.??

From memory I bypassed the DeCrypter stage & just used to Shrink & then burn. , but my disc didnt turn out. All I had was about the first 2 minutes of copyright stuff on the recording & no movie.

    Can anyone help. many thanks

    Brain,

you cannot, I repeat cannot bypass the decrypt stage. DVD Decrypter removes the copyright protection from the DVD. Do it again but use dvd decrypter first.

Well dvdshrink does it all direct from the disc.

Rip/strip/compress/re-author all in one hit and that means only 4.36Gb of Hd space used.....

    Check out http://www.chrismccann.co.uk

Excellent guide here, you will not be disappointed - also a guide on burning with recnowmax (if you have it).......

Dvd decrypter is a ripper - dvdshrink is all in one EXCEPT to burn.

The guide should indicate EXCATLY where you may have gone wrong - any questions just post...._X_X_X_X_X_[small]Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down

Valian. Did you check out the disc on the 'puter or did you try it on a standalone.

I remember getting a weird disc just like you described. The FBI warning and nothing else. I can't remember if the disc did turn out alright but see if you can manually select the chapters and stuff. Sometimes it is just the software you're using to view the disc on the 'puter. I know Power DVD XP can be really flaky sometimes in this regard.

    Thanks guys,

there seems to be some conficting advice here.

    Carlitob says definately need Decrypter

Baabaa says Shrink does it all 'cept burn.

Which is correct, also if Shrink doesnt remove macrovision then how can one burn after only that process only??

    Tosca ,

I couldnt get it to play back ('cept the copyright) on any of my 3 standalones. I dont think i tried it on the computer though, anyway I turfed the disc in disgust.!

    Forget about your macrovision issue.

Create a folder on your desktop called VIDEO_TS (in uppercase)

You can either use dvd decrypter to rip, then dvd2one to process and nero/recnowmax to burn.

Or dvdshrink it and nero/recnowmax to burn.

When you rip it removes the encryption keys.

The macrovision content is usually not there after you have ripped.

dvdshrink OR dvd2one will produce an authored folder with ALL files needed to play on a standalone player as long as they reside in a VIDEO_TS folder -------- Trust me.........

Use dvdshrink and the link for a guide - it works ..........

Generally people have had issues if they rip with dvd decrypter and THEN run it through dvdshrink.
As dvdshrink contains a ripper internally you can do it all with dvdshrink ----again Trust me

Yeah, i agree with BaaBaa completely. DVD Shrink does remove macrovision and region coding and the CSS Encryption (Which basically is similiar to marcovision). DVD Shrink is a very easy and very fast tool to use. However, i use both DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter/DVD2One when backing up my DVD's. This is because sometimes DVD Shrink cannot do multi-region and a few other problems.

At the end of the day, DVD Shrink will produce a file ready to burn in around 30mins at level 5 compression or 10mins and no compression, around 15-25 level 2-4. The DVD Decrypter method takes twice as long and you need double the hard disk space.

    Ok Oriphus & Baabaa,

I followed details to the letter. Still no good, all I get is the first couple of mins with the copyright stuff & then DVD player stops as if end of video. On one of my other dvd players all I get is an error (not even the copyright stuff). man I must be doing soemthing wrong.

BTW I can replay the files from my hd OK (i get the full movie) in windvd, so it appears maybe something is going wrong in the burning process??? & also Xcopy xpress works ok with my reg 4 disks.

I also cant replay the burned disk on my computer although all the files appear to be there.

One thing though I couldnt create a folder in uppercase (VIDEO_TS) all it would let me do was lowercase. Is this critical to the process??

Oriphus mentioned that sometimes Shrink cant do multiregion , this was a reg 4 disk, is that the problem.

If I can replay the files on my computer then could I send the video & audio signals to my desktop dvd burner & do it that way??? or woou7ld I lose quality??

man this is frustrating & I really appreciate all the help you guys are giving.... but soemthing is sadly wrong here.

    Guys,

also just tried sending the video & audio signals to my desktop but all I get is a screen of coloured lines., isnt this the macrovision crap??? which i thought would have been removed???

    Right lets have a look....

The VIDEO_TS folder needs to be in uppercase - cannot understand why you cannot do that.

Just on your desktop - right click - select new folder - then rename it to the above with caps lock on.....

What files have you that play - please list ALL the files you have, before you go to burn?

Also, if the data had macrovision embedded in them - then it would probably play but with the macro on it so you would see the rubbish then...

No offense, but there is something amiss with your method I think.

    What steps are you using?

    I use:
dvd decrypter - to rip - file mode
    dvd2one - to process - compress
    recordnowmax - to burn

I also use dvdshrink with multi episodes, then recordnowmax to burn...

It could be a problem with the region 4, never done them.

Answer the above, and we can go from there.

    Vts_03_1.vob 17717k VOB file

    hope i havent missed any!!

    anyway i used Shrink.

so I will now try Decrypter & see see how that goes

    cheers

also i remember reading somewhere on the search pages (cant find it again) about forcing Windows to make uppercase instead of lowercase.

somewhere in settings but cant find it, also when I just read the burned dvd from MY Computer the folders are definately in lower case. Maybe this is the prob???

Firstly, you may have TOO much there - I have done the maths and added your files up and come to 4.5Gb

However I do know that the the actual number of Kb does get a little out of sync.(cannot remember the exact conversion - maybe 1024=1Gb, or 1048=1Gb)

But using dvdshrink the total file size SHOULD be at approx 4.36Gb at a maximum - less to be sure.(green bar - NO RED)

However as it managed to burn without saying not enough space on the disc, then we could probably discount that - however it is worth checking - and maybe selecting a higher compression number - an option to consider....

You do need the VIDEO_TS folder in uppercase, this is an issue YOU NEED to resolve......
(still cannot understand the CAPS issue - sorry)

Looking at your files - the structure is fine.

    Each ifo has a bup.
Each vob set has an ifo and bup.

So I can see that the files are in order.....

What program are you using to burn and what options are you choosing?

Again the VIDEO_TS is very important.

Is this a full disc you are doing OR stripping areas?
Have you selected to make region free?

I am going to have a look at the guide I suggested and see if I can see the poss problem area...

Well I must be honest - Nothing is jumping out at me at the moment.....

I know I keep repeating but yes - the VIDEO_TS is required.

You say it plays fine from the hd - is this AFTER you have processed with dvdshrink BEFORE burn?

If yes, then we need to look at how you are burning/software/options/dvd+r/dvd-r - and yes again the VIDEO_TS folder....LOL

    Baabaas,

It read fine after I burned with copytodvd

I have now ripped with Decrypter & will compress with dvdto1 & then burn & see what happens

BTW if I have alook at the files after I have ripped with decrypter or smartripper too, I note that there in NOT a video_ts file whereas there is if I used Shrink

If this fails then i will get a copy of recordnowmax & see how that goes

    Success!!!!!!!

    Finally,

I used decrypter, dvd2one & then burnt with copytodvd. Plays back well.

Great thanks all (especially Baabaas) for the help.

One more thing I searched for region code problems & found that you just can use decrypter to rip off the disk. You need to change the region code etc. Well it looks like my Panasonic DVDRAM (which also writes -R) has no capapcity to change the region code. Could that be right???

If thats the case I'll have to get a DVDROM & set that up to region 1 & leave it at that.

There seems to be always something else to worry about.

    Congrats....glad you got there....

Oriphus could answer the RPC situation better than me as I think he has experienced it.

However I still belive the region code is only looked at when you actually play the dvd, so in theory your dvd could be used in conjunction with dvd decrypter to just rip off the region and make it multiregion.

I am not sure this is an issue with dvdshrink as dvdshrink tends to preview the disc upon loading and therefore may have a problem with other region discs!!!!!!!!--really not sure though...

    Anyway well done....

    Strange,

Aftyer I have ripped, I notice that there is not a video-ts files in my folder & its only after I use dvd2one that one gets created in the new folder. Is that correct. Also I seem to have a disk that is neither region encoded (ie regions free) but also doesnt seem to have any encryption or at least thats what SmartRipper is telling me. the disc is Elvis-Aloha from Hawaii. ANy others had disks like this???

Some discs do not have encryption on the and there for there are no keys to decrypt.

I always run them through a ripper though, then I can manipulate the files at my leisure...

The video_ts files you mentioned are constructed from dvd2one or dvdshrink.

The video_ts ifo contains the information of what is on the disc/region coding/menu and general information about the complete disc.

So if you have a disc, and are stripping bits out, then the video_ts ifo has to be re-authored to contain the changes you made....

    Ie.
If you have a commercial disc, and rip the complete disc and just burn it (dvd5), then you are mirroring the original...(no changes)

If you are doing a dvd9 and stripping menus off etc, then you would not need the video_ts because it contains the info on from the original structure - now you have removed bits - then the video_ts is incorrect so dvd2one and dvdshrink will re-author a new video_ts ifo related to the information that you selected in the various options.....

Basically the video_ts ifo is the main directory of where everything is......

    Hope this helps
