Alright, I'm going to say it up front. I am a burning noob. I knew just enough about my old CD burner to drag stuff into it and make CD's. Recently I bought a Samsung DVD burner with lightscribe. Unfortunately, either due to my own idiocy, or some fixable problem, I cannot seem to make DVD's consistantly. In fact, I have only successfully done so twice, out of about twenty attempts. Every failed try seems to happen during the "lead in" phase, and apparantly leaves me with a coaster, as I can't seem to get Nero to recognize the disc after this happens, so no wiping and restarting for me. I am including an error log from Nero, it doesn't mean anything at all to me but perhaps someone here will be able to look over it and give me something to go on. I'm hoping it's just some configuration issue that I can fix in options, but I'm worried that it's an actual drive issue. I got it from Newegg a few months ago, and hadn't really used it for anything other than reading DVD's until a week ago or so, and it reads just fine. Only problem is the write aspect. I am using Memorex media, which I understand is poor in general, but an 80% failure rate seems a little extreme to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm feeling very frustrated at the moment.

I'm not sure why the DMA mode is saying off, because I checked the link you gave me and both my primary and secondary IDE devices are set to DMA if available just like the walk through says they should be. I'll get a different set of DVD's to burn with and see if that helps at all.
First, your computer settings--the DMA setting--is incorrect; that means that you cannot draw any accurate conclusions about the discs you are using. Second, Samsung drives are not generous for their support of a variety of different MID codes. It is very possible, even likely, that with DMA on the discs may not work well if the drive does not include proper write strategy support for the discs. In that case, too, the fact that they do not work means no conclusion can be drawn on their intrinsic quality. This is a common mistake. There are other sites where users have drawn different conclusions about the same discs you are using, either because those users have drives that support them or the users know how to distinguish between compatibility and quality.
Well how do I fix the DMA? Like I said I went to the link posted and it says that my IDE channels in device manager should be set to DMA if available, if I'm understanding the guide correctly. All of my IDE adapaters are set to DMA if available, and I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the DVD drivers from the device manager as well. Not sure what else to do with the DMA thing.
The disc is a DVD-RW. If the disc's address section is corrupted for any reason, it may have to be fully erased on the drive. Even then it may not work. Have you tried any DVD-R or +R discs, or have you been trying to record the same disc over again? Your drive firmware needs to be updated. It is version SB03. The newest version is SB05 available at the link below: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/d...er&model_nm=SH-S182M&mType=FM&dType=D&vType=R Updating the firmware may help in allowing your drive to use the DVD-RW media you have. It might not, also, if the MID code was not added to its firmware table. It also may not be able to salvage the DVD-RW disc you have. Try a DVD-R or DVD+R write-once disc to see if you have better success. If so, then the settings and drive would appear to be OK, and it may be a question of the one disc that may be corrupted or even defective. Corruption or lack of firmware support often shows up when a drive is writing the lead-in section, particularly with rewritable media.
I'll try the firmware update like you suggested. And just to clear up any confusion, it isn't one disc that I keep working with, its pretty much every disc.
