Ive recently been put on the right path by the guys on this site who advised me to go with the q6600 rather than the amd. However the fact that there are several versions of this chip has thrown a spanner in my works.

there are several versions of this chip...which is the ideal version?

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Energy Efficient 95W edition Socket 775 (2.40GHz) G0 Stepping L2 8MB Cache OEM Processor

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache (2x4MB (4MB per core pair) Retail Boxed Processor

The OEM is going to be just the chip. It's a few bucks cheaper for those who only need that.

Retail version will include a stock CPU fan, and whatever booklet/manual stuff is included.

If you don't have an old CPU-fan that you were going to re-use you'll need the retail version.
