could use ghost or casper xp to clone the hd than go into safemode to uninstall old board drivers so windows can load new drivers

What I did when I wanted to transfer files from an old PC to a new PC was remove to the hard disk from the old PC, set it as a slave. I then temporarily installed it in the new PC and booted up. The new PC recognised the drive (in my case E:) automatically and I was able to copy files over.

Once done I powered down my new PC and removed the old HDD.
