I'm new to this whole burning thing but I have a decent computer, have nero 7 installed, but I'm looking for a program I can use to convert 20 min tv show avi's so that they are small enough to fit like 10-15 on a single dvd. I tried with nero which burns data fine, but whenever I try to convert like 13 shows to dvd it keeps freezing on me. pleeze help

Is there another program that I can use to convert the files first and then burn them, or a better all in 1.

    Dell pent M 1.5g

    60g hd

Firstly, it sounds like you allready have the tv shows in a compressed format, ie, avi, mpeg-4, divx, xvid. If you want to compress them further, the result will have bad quality. If your trying to put them on a dvd to play in a dvd player with mpeg-4 support, then just drag as many as you can through nero and burn an iso disc(data)and play away.
Perhaps you should give more info on what exactly your trying to do, what format your files are in now, what you want them converted into, etc.

    Hi

As the message above says can you supply a little more detail? Not sure if this info is of much use:
13 or 14 20 minute avi files should fit onto a single DVD - Nero will save them onto your DVD - select "Make Data DVD" - to play back your DVD player must be able to playback avi fils.
Nero will convert avi to DVD but if each avi file is 20 minutes each then if you uncompress them then you will only get a few files (maybe 5 or six) onto a DVD.
VSO Divx to DVD is also quite good -

Well 14 20min Episides is like 280 Minutes on a DVD which is allmost 5 Hours on a DVD and Most "Consumer" programs will not let you Fit 5 hours on a "Standard" DVD because most Consumer programs only support the "Full D1" DVD standard which at Most will only let you Fit 2.5 hours on a DVD.....

You could Fit 5 hours on a DVD if you used the "Half D1" DVD standard (Mpeg-2 at 352x480 at about 1800kbs) and still have acceptable Quality but after encodeing your AVI files to Mpeg-2 at 352x480 at 1800kbs you will need to use a DVD authoring Program that supports the half D1 DVD standard Like "Tmpgenc DVD author" or "DVDLab".....

    cheers

I posted this elsewhere, but it got completely lost in the "Convert AVI, Xvid, DivX to DVD" thread, this thread is new and fresh and a lot cleaner and I seem to be having the same problem as the thread starter:

    *********************
    Hi there,

I have a bunch of tv episodes that I want to put on dvd, each episode is a little under 250mb and is encoded in XviD. I figured I'd be able to pop them on a dvd pretty easily, but when I used my "myDVD" program when I added 1 episode it took up almost the entire dvd, max I could get 1 1/2 episodes on one dvd. I also tried making a data disc but my dvd player would only list the files, not actually play them.

My question is what format should I be using to put them on a dvd so that I can fit 8-10 episodes on a disc and it will be playable in standard dvd players . Here are the details for an average episode:

    Width: 576 pix
    Height: 432 pix
    Duration: 28:14
    Bit Rate: 115kbps
    Audio: MPEG Layer-3
    Frame rate: 29 frames/second
    Data rate: 140kbps
    video sample size: 12 bit
    video compression: XVID

is there an easy way to transcode these? should I be using the program mentioned on the first page of this thread?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

I allready explained this in my Last Post but I guess it didn"t sink In...lol

The First thing you should Know is that the Size of your AVI files has absolutly no bearing on how much Video you can Fit on a DVD, what does Matter is the Total length of the Video you want to fit on a DVD and the Bitrate you use to encode the Files to Mpeg-2/DVD format...
Also there are 4 Different Resolutions (Only 3 are really Practical) or DVD standards that can be used to Create a DVD but most "Consumer" programs Like the One you are useing only support the Most common resolution which is the "720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL" resolution or sometimes called the "Full D1 Standard"...

This Resolution will only let you Fit at the very most 2.5 Hours on a DVD before the Bitrate gets to low and the Quality gets really Bad, But if you use a lower resolution you don"t need nearly as Much Bitrate to encode it which means you fit more Video on a DVD....

And since Most "All In One" programs do not support this DVD resolution you have to do it yourself useing more advanced methods...
What you will need is a Good Quality Mpeg-2 Encoder Like "Tmpgenc" to encode your AVI files to DVD Compliant Mpeg-2 Files and then you will have to use a DVD authoring program Like "Tmpgenc DVD author" to add your Menu"s and Chapters and to author the Files to DVD....

If you want to Fit Ten "28" Minute episodes (allmost 5 hours) on to a Single DVD you are going to have to use the "Half D1" DVD standard which will Produce About SVCD quality which is very good as Long as your AVI files are of Good Quality....

If you want me to Give you a step By step of how to set up your Files to be Encoded to DVD Mpeg-2 but so you can get 280 minutes on a DVD useing Tmpgenc then Just let me know and I"ll try to explain it to you....

First though you should go into your "Sonic MyDVD" software and into your project settings and see if there are Profiles or settings that you can change Like changeing the Resolution to 352x480 and Putting the Bitrate down to about 1800kbs and then you should be able to do it in MyDVD but I have a Feeling that it doesn"t have these settings but you should check anyways....

    Cheers

    Hi guys,

a quick question...i know how to convert the avi tv shows to dvd-video format so that i can watch them on my dvd player. My problem is in navigating through the separate shows. I don't want to have to hit the "next chapter" button a bagillion times to get to episode 6 of a nine part series of episodes. If someone can help me with a program or software that will allow me to insert a menu or chapter navigation that would help me immensely. any help is much appreciated. thanks.

you will need to use a reauthor program like tmpgenc dvd author.Add each file in until the disc is full , then create your menus so that you can navigate to which episode you want to watch.....

there is a tutorial in the guides section at the top of the page

    try the link below for a trial of the software;

Thanks Minion, I wasn't sure if there was possibly an easier way to convert my files, so thanks for not just telling me to "Read my earlier post numbnuts" as politeness is a seemingly a lost virtue in forums nowadays. I'll check to see if those settings are in MyDVD when I get on my laptop and try out the method you've outlined. Thanks again for the help.

I have been using Nero Vision 4 to convert avi files to DVD - this also allows you to create a menu.

I'd like to take you up on your offer Minion. I've downloaded the tmpgenc 1.3.2.98 and the dvd author 1.6.34.89, but I have no idea what settings or what I should be doing really. I'm basically a total noob for dvd authoring, but I can hopefully decipher your directions if you can help me out. All much appreciated.
