    I've burned quite a few DVD's in my time, but a friend bought a Pioneer DVD burner on Ebay and couldn't get it to work, so he gave it over to me. There seems to be no reason it shouldn't work, but early into the burn process, Nero gives up on it. I'm now testing these on +RW discs because I got tired of burning coasters. Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated. I saw the thread here from the last guy that got helped and I updated the firmware to 1.21, but with no result. Anyone have any ideas for me?!? Here's the Nero log:

    - all i can see is this is a little out of date (latest is 6.6.0.16), but i very much doubt this is the problem in your case

    - that question mark suggests you either have the drive in a usb enclosure/or it's external, OR the atapi drivers are'nt loaded correctly. if it's an internal drive, try restting DMA via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

    Other than that your logfile shows nothing wrong. Short of you both being very unlucky with choice of media used, it would appear that the drive is a dud

    Heya Creaky B! Thanks for the prompt reply. I had already updated my version of Nero, but you were right, that wasn't the problem. The DVD burner in question is an external DVD that I am connecting via an external USB port. I have another DVD burner (which works fine) that I connect the same way. You said "Short of you both being very unlucky with choice of media used, it would appear that the drive is a dud." What did you mean by being very unlucky with choice of media used? I've been thinking about this and I looked at my logfile again, and it says, over and over "PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D." Is it possible that this model will NOT burn onto media that is +R or +RW and will ONLY burn to -R or -RW?! That may be a complete newbie question, and if so, please excuse my VAST lack of knowledge, but I don't have any -R or -RW media in the house. I'll have to go out and get some if that's the case. Although I thought most drives made in the last few years burned onto both types of media. Either way, if that's not the problem, and the drive is indeed a dud, what do you suggest I do? Do you think Pioneer will mail me a replacement drive? Just curious. Thanks again for your help!!

    hey, I have the pioneer dvd writer 109 and I had lots of problems with it as nero burn process failed although sometimes if i burn the dvd at 4x then it work (ocasionaly). I checked ide cables & they were working fine, I think the the pioneer dvd writers some of them are not stable and nero just gives up so i tried clone dvd 2 with anydvd and I dont have this problem anymore

    Blank media is one of the most important aspects of burning. I just thought its probably unlikely that you and your friend both had crappy media that was causing the problems. It also sounds like you've tested the drive as best as you can

    @Dethspydr

    Here is a thread that discusses your drive and a similiar problem. You may want to check it out

    http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=91383

    As discussed in the thread you may want to try mounting your drive internally and see if it works that way.

    nice suggestion arniebear, i was replying by handheld and thought i'd read that mounting the drive internally had been tried.

    Hey! Thanks for all the input! I'm still at work, but when I get home, looks like I have a few things to try. One thing I'm still not quite clear on, is it possible that my problem is due to using + media instead of - media? Or is that just silly? Barring that, here's what I have to try:

    1) I'll move the drive (still in the external casing) to my other computer, which runs Win2000 Pro. It looks like (from some of the other threads you guys so nicely gave me links to) that WinXP might be part of the problem.
    2) I'll try using another burning program, and see if it has something to do with Nero.
    3) If all else fails, I'll crack open the external case of the drive and mount it internally. That gets a little dicey for me, though, especially since I'm not much of a tech guy, and trying to connect it to IDE might be a bit more difficult for me. But, heck, no one ever said it would be easy, eh?

    I was especially amused to see that, at the end of the discussion on the link you gave me, arniebear, the guy just threw up his hands and went out and got another drive altogether and it worked fine. That was encouraging. ;P

    Thanks again, guys! I'll update you when I've tried these things.
