    Hi,

I have been attempting to convert a number of .avi files to DVD format with Nero Vision, however I keep getting "illegal disc" and "could not complete end of disc" errors during the writing process. I am using Verbatim DVD+R DL discs and am running Windows XP SP3 on a Compaq Presario R4000. I have searched for firmware updates for my DVD drive and have had no luck. I have posted a Nero log at the end of this message. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Although your drive is recognizing the disks you're using as seen here in the log:

    Media Specific [16..63]:
    00 00 00 4D 4B 4D 00 00 - 00 00 00 30 30 31 00 40 ...MKM.....001.@ 25 25 37 0C 02 2F 63 02 - 2F 63 21 23 0D 0E 14 14 %%7../c./c!#....
    02 01 01 10 00 21 23 0D - 0E 14 14 02 01 01 10 00 .....!#.........

It's still not able to write to the disk as seen here:

    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

    3:38:06 PM #34 CDR -1135 File Writer.cpp, Line 303
    Write error
    E: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532R

I don't know how long you've been using those disks, and Verbatim is a good brand, but your drive isn't liking them. Maybe you got a bad batch, if you're still not having any luck, try switching to a Sony brand.

Also see if you have better luck burning at a slower speed with the VBatims.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try using ImgBurn and another form of dual layer media...hopefully this works out!

Just to add my little bit to this thread, although I read above that there was no firmware update available for your drive.

I had exactly this "Illegal disc" problem with a PHILIPS ED16DVDS DVD burner using Nero 6.

For those who might need advice now or in the future, I simply updated the firmware for the drive from PHILIPS, which was a simple download and took 3 minutes to update. It worked fine thereafter.

I had to update the firmware version to "J5S8" (if that number makes no sense to you, don't panic) - the download tool from Philips below makes it all very easy to update.

Here is the link to the firmware updates for PHILIPS (make sure you choose the right drive - if you don't know which drive you have Philips Intelligent Tool can decide for you - it did for me!):

    http://www.storageupdates.philips.com/en/dvdrw.html

    Good luck!
