If my memory serves me correctly during the installation setup there is a Custom install option that allows you to choose what parts of Nero 8 you want installed on your computer. Since I already have Neo 8 installed I can't really show you via pics but I'm planning on reinstalling it soon and when I do I should be able to show you some pics to show you how to do this.
I have 2 questions for you.
    1. Do you have already have Nero Vision 8 installed?
    2. What are the actual programs of Nero 8 that you want to install?

Actually on second thoughts there is a setup option that can be used to remove/add parts of Nero 8 once it has already been installed. So I should be able to show you via pics how to do this but first please answer the first 2 questions and I'll get back to you.

Okay, I'll do a fresh install of Nero 8 in a few days and then give you some screenshots and guide you through how to do what you want to install and what you don't.

This is the first screen of interest. As you can see the adware that Nero is offering that comes bundled with it is already selected, if you're not careful you'll just press Next and end up installing it as well. While this bundled adware is not really malicious you don't need it and you don't need it to run Nero 8. I recommend you select the bottom option that says
Install Nero without the Ask Toolbar. However the choice is yours.

Now here's the start of the part you're interested in. When you get to this screen choose the Custom option as shown in the picture.

Now when you get to this page you'll have the option of choosing what components of Nero 8 you want installed. This picture is how it looks like by default.[IMG]

Now any item that has a red X next to it will not be installed at all, to choose this for different components right click on it and choose the option This feature will not be available. Then that area should have a red X next to it.

Now this picture is what your component choices should look like based on what you said you wanted to install, all the other areas wont be installed. Because of the scroll function I can't show you all the components in this picture or the former one but I think you get the idea. Basically only the components you want installed you not have a red X next to them. As shown in this picture Nero Express seems to be part of Nero Burning Rom.

I hope that helps and please let me know if something went wrong or you're unsure about something.

Well actually I've went back to Nero 7 but I do recommend Nero 8 as long as you've got enough hardrive space and RAM but since you're only installing some parts of it I don't think that would be a problem.

Thanks for all your help sofar much appreciated, however when i D/L and CUSTOM install the burning rom, express and backitup i am unable to burn cds- it always fails- my question is do i need to add all the serial numbers (HD, Blu-Ray etc) listed if i only want the above components and does the fact that i am running it on xp software affect performance? Thanks again.

I haven't tested how the parts of it you installed under your conditions but it's not surprising that programs like these would need some other parts installed to do certain things however I am not sure what and Windows XP should not be an issue, might want to look at some of the documentation for the program, see if it says what parts are generally essential for what you need or the stability of it, otherwise someone else on these forums probably has more of an idea.
