I've recently got myself a new pc and installed the dvd writer from my old one. However I've had nothing but problems trying to write stuff. I thought it could be a problem with nero(7) so I updated to to 8 but that didn't help. Basicly whats happening is Nero starts to burn the disc then panics and tells me it's something to do with DMA/CRC errors? I've found a bit of info in other threads in here to do with uninstalling drivers for the IDE channels but I'm a bit wary of messing with them. Theres just a couple of things I need to know.
    1. What is the IDE channel and won't uninstalling the drivers not make it work?
    2. Can I try something else to a little less drastic to fix this problem?
    3. Could it be to do with the firmware of my dvd drive (not exactly sure about how firmware works so some advice on that would be nice!

Anyway heres some extra info maybe someone here can make more sense of it than me!

    1. The IDE channel is the Windows interface between the OS and whatever hardware is installed on the IDE buss in question. When you remove it, that IDE channel is disabled until you do a reboot. That reinstalls it.

    2. That's not drastic, go ahead and try it if you like, I don't think that's the problem though.
Did you get your jumpers set correctly when you installed the drive?

    3. Firmware updates are good. Firmware controls the burner's actions when following instructions from the program you are using.
The easy way to update is to use ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter.
Open the program > Mode > Write > make sure your burner is in the Destination menu > Tools > Drive > Check for Firmware updates. This will connect you to the correct page at http://www.rpc1.org and you can download the firmware. It's usually some sort of .exe you run and it will load in the newer firmware.

You may end up replacing the drive. You can get new drives on-line for a reasonable price nowdays.
