Machine's an HP Pavilion m7750n with an Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 5000+ chip @ 2.60 GHz with Windows Vista Service Pack 1. Have a Plextor PX712A and Sony/TS H653L with latest firmware. I've successfully made edited copies of DVR-MS videos to DVDs with Nero 7 Vision 4, but then suddenly ran into problems--the program hangs up and won't even copy it to the desktop. Nero 8 has same problem. Downloaded 8.3.2.1, assured by Nero tech it dealt with bugs in v. 8 but it didn't do any better. Plus, the Nero Info Tool would work but now hangs up, too. I was able to make one successful DVD, but then the problem resumed. Tech says it's a firewall problem. The Windows FW is off and the Norton's is on but set to "Allow" Nero programs. I've deleted all Roxio/Sonic as well as Ahead/Nero programs from C: and the Registry, used both the Nero File Cleanup Utility and the Windows Install Cleanup Utility to eliminate all Roxio/Nero entries. After a reboot and fresh install, I have the same problem--can't make edited DVR-MS DVDs or get the Info Tool to work. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
So, after trying all the things the Nero tech and Fry's Electronics tech suggested (turning off Norton firewall, deleting T-Timer from Spybot, turning off Windows Defender and eliminating Avira and AVG, etc.) without success, I deleted Nero 8.3.2.1 and installed the 7.11 update download from Nero. Guess what? It works! Didn't have to turn anything off, etc., etc., etc. I noticed one blogger said that a Nero tech said Nero 8 had different codecs from 7 in order to control copying of copyrighted material!!! Who knew? A Nero tech e-mailed me and suggested that sometimes video files get corrupted in the transcoding process and this is what aborts the copying procedure. Whatever, Nero 7 works, so I think I'll use it until I find a good reason for trying 8 again.
Nero tech suggests using 8.2.8.0 instead of the latest 8.3.2.1, but I've gotten Nero working fine, but it's Nero 7.11! He asked me to send him a DVD copy of a DVR-MS to see if he could reproduce the problem at his end. The advice I've received from Nero hasn't been helpful, for the most part. They're not supposed to admit there's anything wrong with Nero, I guess. The most helpful advice was that there may be a problem with the DVR-MS file I downloaded (a cable TV program), but I've successfully edited and DVD'd it with Nero 7. So, what's the deal?
conclusion: nero v8 is a bugged peace of pants BLOATED software... if it works count yourself lucky! but it doesnt a 100% do what it says on the tin!
Haven't used it that thoroughly to come to that conclusion, as you must have. Interestingly, though, in telephone contact with the 10-day free Nero service tech, he asked me to send him a copy of the suspect DVR-MS files (which I did) to evaluate them. Didn't get a critique of the files, but I did get a copy of the latest Nero 8.3.2.1. This was identical to the one I downloaded and tried, but it didn't work; so, I wasn't going to go through that hassle again, just to find out that N8 wouldn't do the job. I've been using Nero 7 (later 7x.x.x than store version) and it works just fine with my Vista. So, let sleeping dogs lie, and all that. Oh, yeh, I also got an e-mail from a Nero tech in Germany asking for a copy of the suspect files. I suggested he contact the LA-area Nero tech I sent them to already and they could talk back and forth, rather than spend a bundle sending a DVD to Germany. Haven't heard back from him, but I waved as I drove past during a recent trip to Germany. (Didn't see anyone wave back!) Auf wieder sehn!
