I'm longtime reader here but never posted. I'm using Nero 9 Burning Rom to backup old tiff files on DVD-R (Sony, TDK, Verbatim) on a 2 year old Plextor Sata-2 internal drive. No burn with -R, only with +R. Is this the drive problem or Nero 9 problem? Or my problem? :)
    Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried different brands of -R's dvd's - happening to all?

    Update on the burners firmware?

Post a log of failure if you can - just need one. You can find them here: document and settings>user name or pc name>application data>nero>nerohistory.txt
If not there then do a search for nerohistory.

I've updated the firmware yesterday but no change. The Plex will burn +r and +/-rw but not Sony -r. I hate to buy new -r's to find out if different brands will work but I'll give it a shot. Frustrating. Thanks for your help.

Yeah it can be a pain but give a different brand a go - you could just have a bad batch of Sony's or they don't agree w/ your burner.

I don't know what speed you're burning at but if you haven't tried different speeds try taking it down a notch or two.
You can also use simulation instead of 'actually' burning - if that is successful then the 'real' burn should (but not guaranteed) work.

Your instincts and experience are right on: Fujifilm -r works fine. Mission accomplished and I thank you for the help.

Not a problem - glad that did the trick!

Personally I swear by Taiyo Yuden - might want to checkthem out. If you are in the US check out supermediastore.
