I get error with both Nero and DVD Decrypter when trying to burn a full mivie on Dual Layer 8.5G Memorex DVD+r DL discs. Please have a look at the log file from Nero. I am using a LG GSA-4163B burner with latest firmware upgrade.

    Hi derryl
1st thing edit out the serial #'s at the top of the log - the begin w/ 5C & 1C.
Here's a later firmware you may want to try - A106.

I'd update Nero too - the latest is 7.10.1.0 - links.
May not help this problem but several fixes and enhancements since the version you're using.

    Physical memory : 511MB
    Free physical memory: 76MB
    Memory in use : 85 %

A lot of memory in use. Close any unneeded programs when burning.

Better dual layer to use would be Verbatim.
Is it only dual layer you have a problem w/?

Yes it is only Dual layer that the problems occur. As for the media (Memorex) Did you notice that Nero identifies it as "Disc Manufacturer ID: RITEK, Media Type ID: S04, Product revision number: 66 " And I have used Ritek DVD-R single layer most of the time with no problems at all. I will try the new firmware revision you listed. And if that doesn't work I will get a newer version of Nero and try that. I thank you very much for your guidance. I will report back.

When I downloaded that firmware you linked it has 2 files. Do I use both? If only one of them which one??

When you click on A106 it should only be one file downloded - GSA4163A106.exe. That's the one you want to run to update the drive.
    Here's a direct link - http://lgodd.lge.com/fwdrv/DVD-WRITER/GSA4163A106.exe

Yeah I saw that the Memorex were made by Ritek - not bad but not all drives are as compatible w/ their dual layer as they are the single layer made by Ritek.
Verbatim is probably the most supported by drives when it comes to dual layer.

Oh and not a problem on the help

I won't buy Nero 8 just for this - burning dual layer. I don't think it will solve the problem.
ImgBurn imho is a better burning program for dual layer. It's the updated burn engine of decrypter.
But that also might not do it.

I think you best bet is to switch the media to Verbatim.

    Physical memory : 511MB
    Free physical memory: 58MB
    Memory in use : 88 %

Even more memory in use then the last log. Close unneeded programs when burning. May not be at issue here - good to do anyhow though - if you haven't recently do a disc defrag, disc cleanup and virus scan.

Best thing is to switch media. These discs are failing right from the beginning - doesn't get very far in the burn process.

Still a lot of memory in use = 81% this time. When burning Nero doesn't usually zap that much. So something else is.

I think the best thing to do will be to free up the memory. Shut down everything but Nero or your burning program when burning, no multi-tasking, no web browsing, etc. Some even go so far as turning off networking and anti-virus. Personally I think you should have about 256 meg or more free when you burn.

Also, free up as much space on your hard drive and defrag frequently. You should have at least 10 gig free to do a DL burn, even using an iso. I defrag my drives whenever my file fragmentation reaches 10%.

I use the Ritek S04 DLs sucessfully. It generally takes my new drives about 3-4 discs to learn to burn them well, and usually the problem area is the layer break and 2nd layer. Yes, they're not as good as the Verbatim DLs, but I believe the S04s are better than their D01s which caused alot of people problems.

If you are going to get Verbatim DLs, make sure that they say Made In Singapore! It is becoming more and more common to find Made In India Verbatim DLs, which are not giving good results.

    Hi binkie7! :)

I just couldn't resist jumping in with DLs being mentioned.
