So I'm having trouble with my burning drive already, it's a "SOHW 1633S BS0K" and It's not suppose to run on Vista but according to my experience it's been running pretty good for some time now up until this year 2010. :( Now I did something or something happened but I realize 2 things before hand.

    1. I got new mobo and it's more Esata ready then IDE. The IDE only as 1 port and so I'm using it to attached to both my cd/dvd rw drive and dvd rom drive and floppy. I guess I doctored this nice long lasting optical drive for some time. It's old like 5-10 years old but it did work last year. The problem I'm having is the behavior of both drives is backwards almost. Like Maybe I got the IDE connector cable switched from master and slave i don't know.

    2. The dvd rom drive can rip music play cds and dvds with np just like my compact drive above it, but only thing it can't do is Burn write any data on discs but it can read discs. My precious cd/dvd rw burning drive however is like gone. It can't read or write to any discs. However it still gets notice when checking a discs info burning speed? It can read but subjectively through other optical tools, I don't know what happened. I didn't think an "average" dvd only player would be able to rip music but not write on dics. lol

    3. So sense the drive for my cd/dvd burner is way old version of NERO and because it's an older version I have to install newer version regardless of me having the s/n on the discs 5-10 years ago. So I decided fine, install the latest version 10 and see what problems could come up and possible debugged. According to LITE-ON my drives OEM, There drivers are built in with Nero's software stuff. Ergo I have no choice LOL but to get NERO. Anyway when running Nero Burning Rom I notice I ran the simulate deal just to see if installing Nero 10 would fix my issue. But it didn't. lmao It FAILED to burn, luckily I got 2 errors I think but heck if I know what they mean. I've been diagnosing this for awhile recently not many great tools (cough,M$'s Mr.Fix-it)to show me what's wrong but thnx to Nero there is hope. :) I well post the Error Log below please help me please. I just want to fix my Optical drive to get it to burn read and write again. Thankyou

If this is an IDE drive, I would expect the information regarding which channel the burner is connected to, to be listed here.

If this was an XP box, you could click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager
Select IDE Controllers from the tree and examine the Primary/Secondary Channels /Properties /Advanced Settings to make sure that DMA was selected.

Also, there is another firmware listed here.

OK I got into properties then I see another properties option but it's grayed out so theres only 1 problem, my pc can't find the volume info to both of those drives XD but it can find the volume info too my HD. So I can't find out if DMA is on or off.
And yes both drives are hooked up as IDE the dvd/cd burner is master and the dvd rom should be the slave and then that connects into the floppy and on down to the 1 IDE connection port on the mobo.
I don't know what year my BS0K firmware version is but thnx for the firmware link I well try that. I don't understand how my dvd rom is still working as old as it is and not my cd/dvd burner. I'm hoping w/e happened supposedly it didn't loose it's "ghost"? Which is pretty stupid to have to "ghost" a cd drive to work in a dvd drive right? I wouldn't have known if I lost it or not.

There should be some reference to IDE in the PC BIOS.
If you can boot into that and look for IDE configuration or automatic detection of IDE devices.

Yes your right there is when I booted into the BIOs, but still the same info was being acknowledge that my E-sata HD exists but my 2 IDE cd/dvd drives do not exist!? So is it my IDE cable? Although I do recall preforming the unplug the IDE connectors from the 2 drives and then plug em back in method. That changed nothing unfortunately and effected nothing so I'm still stuck. Any other Ideas to explain how my dvd rom drive is working but my cd/dvd burning drive does not? I asked someone I knew at work about my problem he thinks the unit is defective? Is that possible could that explain all my problems? I obviously would like to be 100% sure it's the unit if it's nothing else before replacing it with a new one you know. :)

I assume they are both on the same cable, you could interchange the connectors (and power) between the two to see if the symptoms change.

I'd suggest that you connect the burner independently of the ROM driver and see if it appears in the BIOS (which I think is what attar has suggested above). Sometimes older/newer drives just don't work that well together on the same cable. Double check you have the burner set as MASTER (the pins on the back of the drive and using the IDE connector at the end of the cable).

You could also try connecting your drives, un-installing the IDE controller in Device Manager and then rebooting - Windows will pick up and reinstall the IDE controller on reboot and may recognise your drives.

If not, it would be best to try another IDE cable.

Sry for late reply been working and stuff. :)

You know what, After trying a different IDE cable ribbon type instead of a tube type. Neither made any difference I think it just goes to show that messing with that only is for HD info and my burner is obviously not a HD so it won't ever recognize, capacity, headers, cylinders ect... in the bios.
*note* IDE cables are a b**** to untangle and setup in a large case. I find another IDE cable but it was a bit short. so I could only disconnect the slave to the dvd rom and leave master connected to the burner attached independently.

But, I did try 2 more methods, but not before backing up my registry of course.
    1. Removing upper and lower filters in reg edit= "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" just encase it's a vista update/policy bug.
    2. Added a new 32-bit DWORD key value in the reg= "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer".

After completing that with no new errors, to my surprise my burner was able to play regular dvds again and I assume write to dvds too. but still can't read or write to any cds so now it's the problem is pretty narrow. :( Funny one time when messing with it i poped in a Led Zipplin cd and it played it, I was very puzzled out of all cds I tried playing this one worked Once it played it sounded a bit choppy though like it was a very scratched disk which was semi-true but then I eject and then push back in and the cd would not be read. lol

So either the cd is special coded for my drive to understand it or it was luck and my CD LAZER LENS is dying or very dirty needs to be checked. Strange incident when it did read the Led Zipplin cd it did not read it as regular audio it had a green + sign to the cd icon which i guess means the cd was produce on a dual layer I guess?
