nero express vs recordnow

I'm trying to burn an authored DVD that will be compatible on multiple players. I've encoded with TMPGEnc and authored with DVD-lab. I want to burn the VIDEO_TS files that DVD-lab made to DVDs

I have RecordNow v6 and am sort of annoyed at the "blind" interface. I hear it is supposed to be good tho...

I also have Nero Express, but am wondering if there is a difference in compatibility between "Express" and "Nero Burning Rom"? I notice that all the tutorials are for NBR and not express. Is there a real difference that would make it worth the 70 bucks to upgrade?

Can someone recommend the best rout to go here to get the most compatible DVDs? RecordNow, NeroExpress, or somthing else?

P.S. I am using Leda DVD-R discs burnt at 1x

 

Hmm, Nero is supposed to be a widely compatible program, but that said i've done everyone of my movies with recordnowdx 4.6, and no compatibility issues on any drives yet, tho it does depend a lot on the media used aswell. Basically the more you pay the better the disc, lol, maybe not true, i use aud $1.10 dvd-rs and never had any troubles tho a fellow aussie here has troubles with them.

With recordnow it's really easy, just go to options and wizard, and untick start with wizard. Click on data, fourth from the left. on the right there there is a scroll bar with multisession, change that to new volume, click on options below the scrollbar, under dvd recording type change to closed. Close that window.

Add files, making sure you add the entire VIDEO_TS folder, not the contents by themselves. Hit the record button and you're off.
There a few other other things in the main options for recordnow you might want to change, such as overburn features etc, but i stay well clear of overburning with dvds.

Hope this helps a bit, and don't forget the guides, i think there is a good recordnow guide, but have a play and you'll find it's really quite good.

 

Another thing, nero express is the dumbed down version for thoose who just like clicking and following the prompts, but if you want to know how a program works, forget the wizards and get your hands dirty, it'll benefit you in the long run.

Anyways that's one pro recordnow post, but i'm sure the nerophites will soon invade...

There are "Nero Fanboys" around, and like all fanatics <GRIN> their chosen software has "never" had a problem!!!

RecordNow Max (Stomp, Sonic et al) v4.5 or later is a Good Choice(tm) as it uses its own burning engine and interface to the drives (unlike Nero, which is VERY dependant on ASPI, and ASPI can cause a load of problems on its own).

But you must check that your burner is supported (most are).

I personally use Prassi PrimoDVD with the upgraded px engine from RecordNow Max v4.5
I also use RecordNow Max v4.5 for some DVD jobs.
I also have Nero 5.5.10.20 which I ONLY use for CDs (DVD is flakey).

Bring on the "Nero Fanboys" now!!!

You could try burnatonce (free), a rather handy program that handles -R and audio mastering.

Or break down and get Nero 6, which will also give you a deluxe version of DVD Shrink (Recode 2). The reason you don't see many posts about RecordNow is because hardly anyone uses it. Remember for every satisfied RecordNow user there are a thousand (literally) satisfied Nero users.

 

So Herbs, just to clarify: are you saying that "Nero Burning ROM Ultra" is good but "Nero Express" not so good? Can you elaborate a bit on this please? Is it just that Ultra has more controll or is there a difernce in how it works too?

 

I've used the recode 2 and i wasn't a big fan, i didn't think it had anything on dvd shrink.

 

I agree with Herbsman that Nero Express on it's own is basically a pile of garbage. You should always use the full Nero burning Rom which never fails for me. To answer the original thread there is really not much difference overall in the performance of either Nero or Recordnow - both can cause some problems with some users so it's best to stick with whatever works for you. If you are starting from scratch you can download a 30 day free trial of Nero from here to see if it's OK for you (as far as I know you don't get any free trial with Recordnow):

Ok, I hear you, but can you please explain why you think this so I can understand too? What about it makes it garbage?

On the Record Now front: I downloaded the version of RecordNow from Stomp which I believe does not distribute RecordNow any more. So the 30 trial is for a product that no one can buy. If you click on "buy" is takes you to Stomp's page where the purchase and download links say it is "unavailable". I called Stomp customer support and the confirmed that they do not carry it anymore. Now it is distributed by Sonic instead. The old Stomp RecordNow looks like this



Note how you have lots of option and menus and stuff there. But the new Sonic RecordNow Deluxe v6.5 looks to me like it consists of a Big Shinny Red Button and that is about it. Here's a screen shot from Sonic's RecordNow DX6.5

Looks pathetic. Is it in some sort of noob mode? It has the look of the free stuff they give away with drives. Unfortunately if that's it.... it's pretty much useless, at least for audio.

 

The reason Nero Express is a pile of garbage is because it causes more recording faults when used on it's own and you cannot configure the settings as you can with Nero burning rom. It also appears to lack burning capabilities in some way since whenever I've used it I regularly get error messages which do not appear when using the full burning rom.

The RecordNow does have one advantage over Nero when it comes to burning audio tracks too - there is a built in volume leveller which Nero refuses to incorporate and for that reason alone I never use Nero for directly burning audio files. I use an audio manager to configure and level the tracks which also avoids having to drag every file before burning. The result is so much better.

The program was originally marketed by Prassi in Europe,
then bought up by Veritas in 2001,
then bought up by Sonic
and sub-licenced to Stomp (USA), Orlogix (Europe) and EasySystems (Japan).

Sonic have "Dumbed the interface down" it seems!

That in itself is not bad, as I suppose they are aiming at the overwhelmingly "[bold]Massive Market for Morons[/bold](tm)".
The underlying px engine is very good, and "proper" versions could be aquired through Stomp and Orlogix.

Now it seems that Stomp has ceased supplying the product

Orlogix's website does not say anything about discontinuing the product, though their supported drive list is out-of-date by a fair bit (I wonder if that is indicative of Sonic pulling the plug???)

I have sent an email to Orlogix asking about the out-of-date supported drive list, the continuation of RecordNow Max with the "proper" interface and the continuation of px-engine updates.

I personally still use the Prassi PrimoDVD interface, but I integrate the latest px-engine updates with it myself (I prefer the Prassi interface, very similar to Stomps but slightly more control).

UNTIL I receive a reply from Orlogix, I shall no longer be recommending RecordNow (as there is a question over availability and support).

Damn Sonic for screwing up one of the world's best burning apps ever!!!!!
