    Hello
    Six months ago I upgraded to a Lg HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B Burner and I was using dvdshrink to make backups of my dvds. Recently I have had problems with the burner. The dvd shrink shuts down once the burning process starts stating that there is not disk loaded in the tray. I have tried to use Nero to burn directly off my hard drive but when I am at the step before burning the files it will not recognize that a disc is loaded. However, I can still watch dvd movies with the drive. I have updated my drivers and I have upgraded to the newest version of nero but to no avail. Does anybody know what the problem could be.

    Thank you for your time

    Oh dear.

    But let's see what memorex discs they are. Download dvdinfopro (free from www.dvdinfopro.com) and run a disc thru its media info check, pasting the results here. Plus see 2nd link in my signature too..

    I downloaded dvdinfo and it has solved my problem. The dvds are no good. Dvd info will give results for some of the disks and not others. The ones that yield information will work in nero, and the others will not burn. I have already contacted the store where I purchased the dvds and they are going to exchange them for me. What brand do you recomend?

    Thank you for your help.

    Sincerely drpsy

    hi, i hope you are all still there and able to give me some advice. my problem is similar to yours except that i am having problems with burning cds in nero and dvds in dvd decryter. the drive i am using states that there is no disc inserted in the tray, even though there is and i have to restart the computer before it will recognise there is a disc in the tray. the media i am using is: sum e-vision 8x dvd-r and datawrite cds. i have always used these and got them from the same place and am on about the third batch of dvds and cd,s.
    my rw drive is a lite-on dvdrw ldw 451-s and my computer says it is working properly.does anyone know why the disc is recogised after restarting my computer? i eagerly await a reply.

    @chrisadna -

    post LAST section of your Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar

    @chrisadna -

    - that's old, latest is 6.6.0.16, update i from here - " http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php "

    - your burner's firmware is a few revisions out of date , GSBC is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1735

    - eh ?

    - hopefully the firmware will sort this out..

    If the firmware doesn't improve matters, get better blank discs as there's nothing else wrong in the log..

    hello everyone, I am having the same problem....sort of. I can play DVD's but i cannot burn anything because the drive is not recognising any of my DVD-r discs or CD-r discs. It says something like disc not inserted. Please insert a blank disc..........But there is a blank disc....i have tried "digital movie dvd-r", Memorex dvd-r" for dvds and "sony cd-r" and memorex cd-r" for music but they both have the same error.
    ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

    here is the log for nero if that helps....

    @joeasdf -

    - Nero's too old. update to latest, 6.6.0.16 - here -
    " http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php " (Update-Package 1)

    - i'm loathe to recommend newer firmware yet as don't know if this is an OEM'd Dell drive or exactly what it is. Have a look thru this thread, there's a lot of duff DVD8631 drives out there - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/179003 (hopefully yours isn't one of them). give us more info on your Philips drive, ie is your PC a Dell, and if so, did the drive come with the PC - stuff like that...

    - yup, Nero's too old to recognise the drive properly. update Nero.

    - as i say, need a bit more info re your drive. Read thru that entire link i pasted, (then we can see if you have indeed got one of the duff drives), ans also provide the other info i've asked for and we can go from there...

    My pc is a dell dimension 8400 w windows xp and the drive came with the computer...its a philips dvd r/rw that is supposed to burn and play dvds and audio cds.

    I updated nero like you said and it still does the same thing.

    Could it be that the disc drive is bad? I could buy an external drive but they're like $200 and i'd rather try and fix this problem then dish out another $200.
    Thanks for trying to help out.

    have you read thru that (large) thread to see if your Philips was out of the bad batch mentioned in there ?

    $200 !, wow you don't need to spend anything close to that for drives. even in Uk we can get the NEC 3540A for a lowly £30...

    Hello creaky.
    My burner is working great. Recently, I bought a 5.1 speaker system and a 5.1 soundcard. I was ready to watch my dvds with my computer but I realize that I needed a dvd software program that decodes 5.1. I have already spent too much cash on the speakers and soundcard and now I am looking for a free dvd software program that decodes 5.1. Do you know of any such programs or do you know of any reasonably priced programs.

    Thank you for your time.

    @drpsy - I don't think there's any free programs out there for that. I have powerdvd which is 5.1 capable and a 5.1 system but I only use onboard sound on this pc so I've just linked my pc to 5.1 system via an analog connection for now. My version is 4.0 and come to think of it I think it came with a soundcard or something, a very long time ago

    Creaky, thank you for the input in helping me fix the problem. Its a process of elimination...i upgraded everything you told me to do but it still didn't fix the problem so i contacted dell and there is a compatability issue or something but i guess they got enough complaints to create a patch to fix atleast my problem....
    For everyone w my same problem with the philips dvd drive here is the fix:
    go here and upgrade the firmware:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&typecnt=1&vercnt=3&formatcnt=1&fileid=132121

    then..

    here for the pio patch:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...63977&formatcnt=1&l=en&releaseid=r53986&s=dhs

    Then if you still have your resource cd that came with the dell cpu then the last step is to test everthing to make sure it isnt another problem:

    Please Run the Built in Self Test in Dell Diagnostics if available.
    To determine whether the optical drive supports the built-in self test, perform the following steps:

    Insert your Dell Dimension Resource CD into the CD or DVD drive, configure the system to boot to the CD drive, and then boot to the Dimension Resource CD.
    NOTE: For more information on how to boot the system to the optical drive, please consult the Dell Knowledge Base article: "How do I configure my Dell computer to boot to the CD-ROM drive?"

    When the Boot Menu appears, press the <Down Arrow> key until Dell Diagnostics is highlighted, and then press the <Enter> key.
    Press the <Down Arrow> key until 32-bit diagnostics is highlighted, and then press the <Enter> key.
    The Dell Diagnostics menu appears.
    At the Diagnostics menu, click the Custom Test button.
    From the list of devices, click the (+) plus sign next to CDROM/DVD.
    From the list of drives, click the (+) plus sign next to the drive which you wish to test.
    Click the checkbox next to Built In Self Test

    I HOPE THIS HELPS!..I just want to help others bc i know how frustrating it is..Thanks again Creaky
