I've been using the same burner and media for awhile now. I reinstalled Windows, and now I can burn CD's, but not DVD's with Nero 7.

Something about recorder not activated or something. It's THE SAME setup I've been using. Media too!

    Here is my error log...

This isn't the current version of nero 7, but version 7.0.5.4 is buggy, so until they workout all the bugs stick with what you have.

    *************************************************************
    Recorder: <DVDRW IDE1008> Version: 0054 - HA 1 TA 0 - 7.0.1.4
    **************************************************************
The firmware for your recorder is not upto date, the current rev is 0060, you should update as it provides greater media support/compatibility. Here's a link to get the update, just enter the model# in the search field and click search, click on the 0060 version to get it, just follw the instructions for installation.

All these devices have DMA turned off and are most likely in the very slow PIO mode, turn on DMA for faster performance. Here's a guide:

Your file sizes a a bit too big, have shrink produce output file sizes of 4300 MB so as to avoid burning too close to the disks outer edge. In shrink goto:edit--preferences, change to custom and enter 4300.

This indicates that the recorder doesn't like this media, the firmware update may resolve this problem, but I suggest switching to Sony or Verbatim DVD+/-R disks, try not to use DVD+/-RW media for movie backups, these disks are better suited for data files not movies.

You're burning at 2x speed, being a little to cautious? Try 4X.

Thanks-- I was just using the RW to test the audio on that file... I do it all the time and this is the first screwy time (after XP reinstall).

I will try your suggestions and post back... thanks!

According to device manager, DMA is enabled on all drives.
    DMA6 (133) on 3 HDDs
    DMA4 (33) on DVDRW

Any idea why Nero thinks otherwise?

    Downloading firmware update now...

Don't know why, but nero is always right on.
Is your burner an external one?

No-- it's internal. I upgraded firmware and the disc burned!

Really weird though-- same burner, same media, same everything as before... just glad it's working. Thanks for the firmware link!
