    Hello all,

Recently I converted a DVD Movie Only to Nero Digital, using Recode 2. I adjusted the target (over 7GB) to one DVD-5 in the belief that the end result would be decent quality, but smaller size.

When the program completed (after 2 passes), I played the resulting file and the quality was terrible.

Could someone explain more about the function and uses of Recode ? for example, why would a film be compressed to fit a CD (74min) when the resulting quality is so poor and where could this be played on ? or is this just for storage reasons.

Blathering on a bit now, so I'll stop and listen.

    cheers

First up I wouldnt recommend using Nero DIGITAL, I only use either of the first 2 options available in Nero Recode...those being
1.Recode an entire DVD to DVD
    2.Recode main movie to DVD

If you are using Nero Recode then you require to use a DVD not a CD

The purpose of Nero Recode is as it's name implies...Recode a DVD (movie) to DVD (to obtain an Exact copy or one with "annoying" bits removed)

If you want to fit a 7gb movie onto a DVD5 then you will have to use a prog such as DVD Shrink

    thanks Gwendolin,

I've been backing up DVD's for a couple of years now, but, only now, am taking a serious interest in the mountain of information out there. There is so much stuff and I spend days flicking between this forum, Doom9 and Digital Video Digest.

Mostly, I've used Shrink as this is a fairly easy program to get around. These days, starting to investigate other programs and advised that since DVD Decrypter and Shrink haven't been updated, that it is more worthwhile to consider progs, like DVDFab HD Decrypter and Imgburn.

    Cheers

    Thanks,

Another question, if you don't mind.

Have Nero Express 6 installed on my system (bought late 2005),

I've tried to install some of the newer versions - from FileHippo - but they require a serial key.

Is it worthwhile upgrading Nero to Nero 7 ?

    Thanks

A lot of the members here still use Nero 6....version 6.6.0.18 which is possibly the BEST of the Nero 6 versions.....I think you can upgrade to 7 and receive some sort of discount. Personally, I use and recommend 7.5.9.0

    @gwendolin

All your info in that post was right on, until the last sentence. If he wants to fit a 7gb movie on a DVD 5 disc he can use Recode. I do it all the time; that's what it's for. Shrink will do the same thing. And I know you know that as well. :)

I actually haven't used DVD Shrink much in the last year or so...I prefer Recode's speed and have recently been using DVD2One, which is even faster and may have a slightly higher quality output than either DVD Shrink or Recode.

yeah I'm pretty much a Recode guy myself. I have used CloneDVD too but I have realized that in a series of 3 straight backups with clone, the audio was not put on the dvd. ?? Having to redo them.

That's a shame...give DVD2One a shot, you can do two in the time Recode takes...batch mode at that.

Just DLed DVD2One will try it out. Can't ever have too man tools these days. Blades of glory took fourth program try (DVDFab HD ) to do this one along with FixVTS and Nero Express main movie only-no compression.

You will like it garmoon. The interface takes some getting used to when you are familiar with DVD Shrink and Recode, but it really is an excellent program with all that aside.

I was under the impression that it was a free program? I got a DL of with a 30 day trial. Is there a free version? I'm not going to pay for that program before I buy Platinum DVD Fab Decryptor HD, which seems to be the total package.

It is, unfortunately, a pay program.
