    DVD Shrink is simple.
Either rip the DVD to the hard drive and 1 'Open files' or simply 'Open Disc'.
Select 2'Re-author' and 3drag 'Title 1' from right to left.
4 Right click on Title 1 and 'Set Start/End Frames'
A new screen opens and you choose a section you want to keep and 'OK'.
Drag 'Title 1' from right to left again and repeat for the next selection.
Repeat as required. You can move your selection order up/down on the left hand window.
When ready, 5 click 'Backup' and either save to a new folder or burn to disk (you should be offered the choice of burning with Nero).

if i go to reauthor :in the left colum it shows the dvd, on the right it lists harddiskdrives, devices with removable storage, when i click on the drive where the home video is (E) it comes up empty

What files or folders does Windows Explorer show on the DVD.
When you said the files were on a DVD I assumed they were DVD format files.
There should be a folder named 'VIDEO_TS' which will contain (among others) .VOB .IFO .BUP files.
If the files are not in this format, then DVD Shrink cannot process them.

    Try Avidemux.
Load/drag the file onto the window.
    Set 'Format' to' MPEG-PS(A+V)'
Use the slider and the A/B buttons to mark the bit you want to remove.
Click 'Edit' and 'Delete' the selection.Repeat as required.
Click the 'Save' logo and save the edited file.
Give it a full name including extension e.g. edit1.mpg

You can load clips in DVD Flick (each clip would be a 'Title' or can be merged into one large title) and if you opt to create a menu, each title would get a menu entry.
In the project settings, remember to set the video as NTSC (North America) or PAL (EU and Australasia).
DVD Flick includes Imgburn and will burn the disk if required.

I believe 'FAVC' has much the same features (it requires .NETframework alas)and also allows you to use your own images as the menu background.
