I have two computers with two different versions of Nero. I have a 4-year old emachines computer with 256mb ram & 80gb hard drive that has Nero 6 Express installed on it. When I burn my mp3 audio files to dvd using that system, I open Nero Start Smart and tell it to make a data dvd. I add the appropriate files, put in the blank dvd, choose the speed I want to burn at (I always use 8X) and Nero then begins burning the disc, which is always complete in roughly 7 to 8 minutes. If I open two applications of Nero and tell it to make two discs simultaneously using two different burners, it slows the process down to about 10 to 12 minutes per dvd, but will still burn both dvd's in that amount of time. About six months ago I went out and bought a new HP that dances circles around my old junky emachines. It's got 2048mb of ram, a 320gb hard drive and a 4600+ AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor. But while the old emachines runs on Windows XP, this computer runs on Windows Vista. So when I tried to install my Nero 6 Express on it, it said that it was incompatible with Windows Vista. So I went to Nero's website, spent the money and bought the new Nero 7 Ultimate software. It took a little adjusting as it's a little less user-friendly as far as I'm concerned, but I've got it down and am able to use the Nero StartSmart and can create the same Data DVD's. The only problem is that while I'm still telling it to burn at 8X and it says it is, it's taking an average of a half an hour to burn each disc instead of the 7 to 8 minutes that I'm accustomed to on my old computer. I contacted Nero about this and after reviewing my Nero History Log File, they said one thing that is noticeable is that I haven't activated DMA (direct memory access) and they believe this is most likely the cause for the problem I'm reporting. They gave me instructions for how to access and activate this using Windows Vista, and the instructions are as follows: - For Windows 2000/XP/Vista: Go to Control Panel->Systems->Hardware->Device Manager and now double-click on IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right-click on the Primary IDE Channel, go to Properties>Advanced Settings, and change Transfer Mode to DMA if available. Do the same for the Secondary IDE Channel. Under the IDE ATA/ATAPI menu, however, I show five different categories: ATA Channel 0, ATA Channel 1, NVIDIA nForce 430/410 Serial ATA Controller, NVIDIA nForce 430/410 Serial ATA Controller, and Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller. But when I right-click all of these 5 categories the Device Status says "This device is working properly" and I can't find anywhere on how to change the transfer mode. When I right-click all of these and tell them to update software online, it comes back that all drivers are up-to-date. Can anyone help? Any ideas on why it takes a half an hour to make these data dvd's when it should only take 7 or 8 minutes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mike
Hey Mike, this may help: How to enable DMA for IDE controller http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm or http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/ Or http://forum.lgsoftwareinnovations.com/showthread.php?t=12650
Thanks for the links. I understand how to do it after reading it, but now my device manager says that while there's a Channel 0 (master) and Channel 1 (slave) and says there are 2 supported devices, in the device box in advanced settings it shows nothing there, so I can't activate DMA because there's nothing in the box for it to be activated on. I'm not sure what's going on.
......Update...... I had Roxio (I think that's the name) installed on my HP and after reading through other threads where people had problems printing labels, decided to uninstall it all together. After doing so, I then attempted to burn my first DVD disc from a saved compilation I'd made through Nero StartSmart. I burned it at 8X and it completed it in roughly 8 minutes instead of its usual 30 to 40 minutes. But after attempting to make a second disc a couple of days later, it's now back to its usual slow self. I can't say for certain, but I think it may be related to the DMA. I've followed the instructions provided in the links, but when I open the last window under properties, it says there are two supported devices but displays nothing. Any ideas? I run a small Old Time Radio business, reproducing old radio shows from the 30's, 40's and 50's in mp3 format. Some of my DVD sets consist of only 1 disc, while others consist of 21-disc sets. On my old computer I used to be able to burn two discs simultaneously in 10-minutes for a total of roughly 12 discs per hour. But on this new computer it's now taking me 30 to 40 minutes per disc and when you're talking about making one of those 21-disc sets, it becomes abundantly clear why it's crucial for me to find the cause of this problem and get my burn times back down to several discs per hour. So if anyone has any ideas as to why nothing comes up when I click on properties after right-clicking on ATA Channel 0 and ATA Channel 1, I'd certainly appreciate the input. I've followed every single step in the above links and all of the screen shots look identical to mine until I click on properties / advanced settings. Where theirs then shows the drive and whether it's on IPO or DMA, mine displays nothing as if there is no drive present.
what I would do it uninstall the drive (Primary IDE Channel)and then reboot! Windows will automatically reinstall on the reboot. then go back into DEVICE MANAGER and check up on your Primary ... it should be back to normal with DMA enabled. try that. Should work.
