    Starting surface scan
    Good: 61.63 %
    Damaged: 0.00 %
    Unreadable: 38.37 %
    Surface scan completed

I have a 2.0 Ghz Pentium 4, Windows XP, 1024 MB Ram, NEC ND-2500A 8X +/- burner (Mad Dog Dominator 6-in-1 drive), and am using DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6 with Ritek G04 DVD-R media. I backed up a movie on said media and it plays in my stand alone player well. I used Nero CD-DVD speed surface scan test after I checked on my player and the above results are what I got. The scan was done in my burner drive. Is this result bad or normal after backing up movies? I have also used Verbatim Digital Movie DVD-R and the scan was 100% good after backing up another movie.

This is my first post. I hope that I have provided enough information and that my question was clear.

    Hiya Mohawk3,

Welcome to our "QUIET" little neighbourhood ;)

Good to see you are taking the testing route.

Some questions that have bearing on the meaning/validity of your results:

1 - Does the surface scan cover the WHOLE disk area?
    Or just the burned area?

2 - Did you burn the SAME IMAGE to the Ritek and Verbatim?

One thing to note: NEC drives can be problematic at times (the 1300 series was pretty good, but the 2500 can be fussy).

    Have Fun...

    Dr. Chips,

Thank you for responding quickly and the welcome. The material on both disks are different, so the answer to question 2 is a no. For Question 1, I am not sure if the scan covers the whole disk area. I know that used all available space on the disk when creating the backup, but I am afraid that I just ran the scanning test without knowing fully well what it is scanning. I am sorry that I can not give you a bettter answer. I ran out of Verbatim media because I only bought a 3 pack to test out the burner. I have some Maxell 4X DVD+Rs left from a ten pack that I got on sale. I can probably back up the same movie on both types of media and run the test again. Mainly I wanted to know if I should worry about the longevity of the media or possible quality issues. I have read many glowing reviews of Ritek G04 media and was excited to get some from Meritline's website.

I have been pretty happy with my drive so far. I have made a cd without any problems and every movie backup that I have made plays without problems on my Denon DVD-900A player. I got the burner for $99.99 after rebate at CompUSA 3-5-04.

    Hiya,

Any meaningful comparative test would have to take those two questions into account..

Be VERY careful with Memorex (there seems to be a fair bit of rubbish media out there with Memorex printed on it).

Also be aware, there is genuine Ritek, and not-quite-so-genuine Ritek (think RiData etc), watch out for pass-off names ;)

Verbatim, I agree with (I use Verbatim Advanced Metal AZO dye for my archiving).

Long-term storage without data loss is another thing altogether, as no-one has been able to test that yet...

    Have Fun...

    Dr. Chips,

The Ritek DVD-Rs are RiData. Is RiData bad? I thought that they were supposed to be good. Do you know if there is an online merchant in the US that sells Ritek that are in an acceptable form. I got the RiData from Meritline. The RiData discs that I got are unbranded silver matte style. The RiData says RITEKG04 on Nero DVD Info The memorex disks that I have are made by Ricoh (RICOHJPN R01 on Nero Disc Info). Thanks for all your insight so far.
