    Hey!,

This is a burner I put onto a spare machine, never had any trouble with it in the past and now 6months in hibernation it doesn't write..

    I've done the following:
#changed it to use DMA because it was set to PIO.
#updated the firmware to 1.0C (without a disk in the drive)
#attemped to write a disk with only 754MB rather than pushing its limits.
#I've tried 2 types of media.
    #Tried at 1x

And still no joy :-(, please help, this burner is about to go out of the window.

    (I've been trying dvd-r's)

    Hi vbJoe
I think it might be time to replace it. Illegal disc errors are usually caused by the firmware not supporting the media you are using.
You have the latest for it but it's from 2004 so newer media like 16x might give it problems.

Try and find some 8x or lower media for it - can be found online usually depending on where you are.

    Hi vbJoe,
The problem is that your burner is older, and even you have the latest version, that is also old, and it does not support the X16 media. Get some X8 discs.
    EDIT: I am sooo...slowww:)

Thanks for the reply guys :)

I'm fairly sure my sony discs are 8x, my other discs (I think there telvion or something like that) are 16x for definite.

I agree, it is quite old now and maybe it's just cacked. its a shame, served me well over the years too!
