I am using Nero 7 (Nero Vision 4) to burn DVD's from Tivo created files. Although Nero Vision sometimes finishes successfully, most of the time it simply freezes during the transcoding process. This problem has been addressed in other threads but I have not been able to find anything to resolve this issue. Thinking there might be a memory conflict with something else (virus protection, firewall, etc.), I tried running it from "Safe Mode". I then receive a message stating it is necessary to "Manually Activate" DirectX. How does one manually activate DirectX? I am only using Nero to write the necessary files to the hard drive and then I use DVD shrink to actually burn the DVD. I am making this point because an older thread said this problem was related to not having DMA transfers enabled for the burner. Since I am not using the burner when nero Vision is transcoding, this should not matter.
Not many programs will work in Safe Mode (except for various Window's utilities), this is not the answer. >>>> I am only using Nero to write the necessary files to the hard drive and then I use DVD Shrink to actually burn the DVD Shrink does not have any burning abilities, it's a transcoder only. What exact version of Nero are you using and what are your system specs?
Nero 7 / Nero Vision 4 3.75 GHz Precott / 250 MHz FSB / 2 GB Memory This system is proven stable under 100% long time CPU load. Although it is a Precott, max CPU temps never exceed high 130s F (Idle about 115 F). Nero Vision crashes only during the transcoding process, before burning begins. It only occurs when there are two hours of video to transcode (never with only one hour). It also appears to only crash when when the two hours of video come from two one hour files, with the second hour constituting a second chapter (I have not yet conclusively proved this). The crash does not occur when the transcoding process hits the transition from the first hour to the second hour. In fact, it occurs at no predictable elapsed time. I have 2 pass transcoding specified for higher quality and I burn to a DVD-9 as it will hold two hours of video without compression. Nero Vision just freezes, at some point during the transcodong process. Windows Task Manager is then required to exit Nero Vision. The total elapsed time indicator continues to count but everything else just freezes, included the preview display. Interestingly, it appears I have a high probabilty of successfully completing the transcoding only if I start the process very early in the morning (circa 0530 or so). This observation made me ask myself what is different at this time of day? That is why I thought of Safe Mode because that will eliminate most, if not all, other background tasks that might be causing a conflict and the resultant crash.
Nero updates frequently, your version will fall in the range of 7.0.xx to the current 7.5.XX. The Nero folks here usually will recommend what they feel is the most stable version. Your problem seems odd, especially since I assume the TIVO files are basically identical. It also seems odd that early morning jobs may work. It does almost sound like a heat issue... but? You could try using Task Manager to shut down some processes before trying again. Disconnect from the net and start with your AV, firewall and anything else you can think of. I would suggest you get a Nero log that folks can look at. Some info here: http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/support.php Here's a post on working with TIVO files: http://www.apecity.com/tivo/ With a Nero log maybe the next step would be to try the Nero Forum here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/156
Hi, I have the same problem: Nero Vision crashes only during the transcoding process, before burning begins. It only occurs only when there are more than about 90 minutes of video to transcode (never with only one hour). Could you please advise. Thanks in advance.
