I am using Windows XP SP2, 3 ghz processor with 1 gig of ram, Nero 6.6.1.15 (I dont use newer versions cuz they are severely bloated). I never had this problem before (I burned 4 whole discs a couple months ago) but now I wish I was a frequent burner so I would remember exactly how I used to do it before when it worked. basically, I've wasted over half an hour now and a whole DVD Double layer disc (8 GB) when I burned with nero express with a speed of 2.4x. Everything seemed to go fine, but then i couldnt view the files with explorer... it said disc is empty. However, Nero reports that the disc is full and so I can't re-burn, so i trashed the disc. Now with a new disc I burned just one 200 MB file so i wont end up wasting the whole disc. Same thing. When I try to open nero express again it says im starting a new multisession disc and not "continuing" (I dont see this option anywhere) and explorer won't show the files. Umm, explorer didn't show the files the first time when I started a multisession with a brand new, empty disc.

Then I tried nero burning ROM to see if it would go better. it didnt do better but at least it told me what is wrong.

    Here is the error log:

It seems that your burner doesn't like the discs that you are using. Update the firmware for your burner, there is a newer version than CA01.

Turn DMA on; if you want to burn with Nero, remove the Roxio driver
using RoxiZap. However, for dual layer( and burning DVDs in general) I would use ImgBurn.

Would definately agree here. Imgburn seems handle DL burning a little better than Nero. For DL burning, you're best bet is to also use Verbatim discs.

Consecutive read errors are typically what cause your drive to slip into the much slower PIO mode.

EDITED: as per typo, seen by CYP.

I think is the consecutive read errors that cause to slip into PIO mode, which in turn leads to write errors? Could also be a old bad cable.

Yes, i meant read errors. Edited accordingly, thanks for catching my typo bro.

And yes, it is possible a faulty cable could also lead to DMA being disabled.

yes I used the same discs before. I bought a new power supply box after so I had to re arrange all the cables but Im sure that the DVD cable is connected to the right spot in the motherboard and can be readed and written as I can still read my old DVDs that I burned months ago.

I followed the DMA guide link but most pictures were gone. can I get written instructions instead?

is my DVD drive the primary or secondary IDE channel?

    thanks.

Hi, I reinstalled Windows so DMA mode is on for both ports now but I still have the same problem.

what now? do you strongly recommend to update firmware drivers or use imgburn?

how do I get started on updating firmware? thanks.

You did not have to reinstall Windows, just the drivers for your burner9hopefully that's what you did).
Try here, you'll find info about your drive's firmware:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=43413

Also, like suggested above, I'd get Verbatim DL discs.

It looks to me as though Nero might be the culprit, or as suggested already, the discs...
Nero isn't managing to close the discs and as there is no Session Data, the discs cannot be read either...
You can test the theory by writing a multi session disc...
If it can be read, then try the suggested discs and/or software...

Hi RGFindlay, the discs worked fine before, and I can read the discs I burned before fine, i just cant write. I am writing a multisession disc so did I misunderstood something in your post?

I also tried imgburn but it seems to only burn ISO files to disc which is not my purpose. I tried deepburner too which also failed.

I tried using an external DVD writer which also failed and returned the same error as my built-in DVD drive.

Ive spent so much money on these things, it is driving me crazy, what is wrong!

That being the case, I am a bit confused...
    DAO isn't really appropriate...
    Try writing SAO instead...
I would expect Disc-at-Once to be disables in Session Mode...
I have no real Experience with Sessions... I tend to write Closed discs...
If you are filling the disc and not adding to it, perhaps consider writing Closed Sessions (Labeled as 'No Multi-Session' in Nero if memory serves...)

    hope this helps...

But I want to be able to write to the disc later. for now im just burning a small test file until i see it working again. it must be multi-session.

  18. RGFindlay

    Then try burning Session-At-Once...?

  19. RGFindlay

    RGFindlay Guest

You probably already know... Only the last session burned will be visible to explorer... you can save the contents of earlier tracks using the 'Save Tracks' utility, though...

Hi guys I am happy to say that my problem is solved. I bought verbatim discs as 7thsinger kindly suggested and they work perfectly. my guess is that the DVDs I bought were manufactured poorly and only had the first 2 good quality. crooks!

thanks again everyone for the replies!
