    hi A level student here.

Question is i have to suggest a network for this business for my ICT course. i have suggested the business use switches with a star network topology.

thing is im not sure if switches can provide internet access as well as data tranfer across the network.

i cant decide if i need a router or not basically.

    help very much appreciated cheers

Switches are at the very heart of business networks. They are connected to a router as an extension. At the place I used to work had side rooms with rack mounted switches capable of handling up to 30 CAT-5 connections, with over 20 or so switches in all.

    Ex: Internet - Modem/Router - Computers/Switches - Computers.
