is there anyway 2 computers that are remote (really far away, say one is in UK and the other somewhere in Australia) can be connected so that each can access files from the other easily as if accessing files over a LAN....any way through ftp or the like, just so that file transfer of large files (i'm talking about gigs) can be done, without needing to upload them to internet file sharing servers... please let me know if its possible andwhat software(s) is required and how to do it???..i'd really appreciate it... and i apologise if this thread is in the wrong forum, i couldn't find anything about networking on the forum.... thanks
It's possible to use Windows File Sharing and/or Samba, but the security risks with that are high, unless you use restrictive firewalling (i.e. restrict access to the Netbios, etc. ports (137-139 and 445) only to the IPs that you intend to communicate with. Oh, yeah, better be fully patched too. Better to use FTP itself. There's a nice, free FTP server for Windows called Cerebrus. You can use an FTP client like BulletProof (not the same as the BulletProof Software, maker of spyware-ridden software called SpywareNuker.) You can both run the server and run the client if you need bidirectionality. If you are on cable or DSL, you probably have an upload speed limitation (384kbps to 768kbps), but there is no way around that other than upgrade your service. So, you won't quite get LAN performance, but that's close.
