I need a new antivirus (And firewall [all round protection]) program for my laptop, price is no object. I tried zone alarm, however, it's constant pop ups and randomized system scans slowed the hell out of my computer. Any suggestions on a new one? Also, I looked at that thread about the best antivirus and such, but I think that is just the best of the FREE type, but I'm willing to pay. Thanks
ZoneAlarm is a crappy firewall. Many websites offer free firewalls and antivirus. One example is AVG Free Edition. A free firewall, one that I use and prefer, is Comodo Firewall, which can be downloaded here.
Well, I've never had quite a nice experience with a pay firewall. In fact, I've never used one. So your best bet is to ask someone else.
Fredil, Your sig's too big buddy. We have the sig limits in the forum rules and there's a link to those in my sig
Ive used BitDefender for the last year or so. Its my first all-in-one. I like it. Before that I used Avast AV and Ad-Aware with Sygate Firewall. Hope this helps.
Hey NicHt, Was reading some threads and thought I’d kick in some comments. I haven’t posted on AD for some time now but still read through from time to time. Just remember, all of my comments are from experience, personal testing of the programs and my own humble opinion. Not to say that it will fit anyone else’s needs. I download and test a Lot of programs. I use Acronis 10 to backup my HD then test and after testing restore my computer to it’s original state ( takes about 5 mins to backup and 5 min to restore ) Free AV’s #1 Avira AntiVir – highest catch rate for in the wild viruses and not hard to use. #2 Avast – slightly lower catch rate but harder to understand and use. #3 AVG – the worst catch rate but the easiest for the Novice to use, and Free Paid AV’s #1 Bitdefender #2 Kaspersky #3 F-Secure All of these come in Suites that contain an AV, Firewall and Anti Spyware/Malware If you’re not a Geek, with a capital “G” they are very intimidating and difficult to understand and set-up. Free Firewalls The only 2 that I ever recommend are OutPost and ZoneAlarm Free. I personally prefer ZA. Some reviewers say that ZA fails the leak test but I found that to be a farse.. I have tested ZA for leaks and never lost a “bit” ( pun intended ) also it tests at completely Stealth ( ports can’t be found ) Paid Firewalls #1 Zonealarm Pro #2 Outpost Pro #3 Comodo Pro These are all very difficult to use and really not worth the hasstle. Anti Spyware/Malware #1 SpySweeper #2 Spyware Doctor #3 AVG Anti-Spyware ( also has a Free ver. ) Some will disagree with me on the #1 and #2 positions as do a lot of the reviewers. The reason for me placing Webroot SpySweeper in the #1 slot is that it does as good a job as Spyware Doctor except it doesn’t use as much resources and dosen’t slow your machine to a crawl. I personally am using, at the present time, Avira Antivir Free, ZoneAlarm Free and webroot SpySweeper paid. I must also add that I never get any baddies from surfing the web. The only time something unwanted slips in on me is when I download it myself. This is because I use Ghostsurf and go thru Proxy servers that let me surf invisibly. But that’s another story and can have it’s downfalls if not done correctly..
After reading your post 2oldGeek I uninstalled AVG & put on Avira AntiVir. Thought it worth a try...thanks.
That’s great, Altercuno, I believe you’ll find that was a good move. I am in the process of checking out Counter Spy and already I like it. The 2007 Toptenreviews now places SpySweeper at #1 and Counter Spy at #2 Spyware Doctor has fallen out of grace. Check these reviews: Counter Spy SpySweeper With what I’ve seen so far Counter Spy is extremely easy to use, it’s not a resource hog. Just need to see how efficient it is. I’ll know more after I’ve used it for a while.. My tests consist of lowering my shields and hitting a few porn and out of favor sites that are notorious for dropping Malware on you. Once I’ve picked up a lot of Spyware/Malware, I attempt to clean it up with my test program. If I can’t get it all, I simply restore my HD using Acronis TrueImage….
NicHt, try COMODO FIREWALL, it comes highly rated and is easy to customize. if you use AVG ANTIVIRUS, you may initally have some probs with it's e-mail scanner and COMODO not getting along, but there is a quick fix for that ...just visit their forums. cheers.
Gah! There's a thread like this already! Here's the linkage: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/292257 I personally use AVG-Free and Comodo Firewall on my Laptop, and AVG-Free and Kerio Personal Firewall on my desktop. Both work very well if all you want are the basics that don't have all the bells and whistles attached. The only pop-ups are the ones telling me there are updates Also, some of those "reviews" that put some things higher than others tend to be biased (duh ). You have to pick what is right for you and your tastes.
