My computer just started smoking after about 2-3 seconds when I powered it up. Not sure why Its a good PSU with alot of power http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023 I was running an amd 5400+, hd3650, artic freezer 64 CPU fan,2 gigs of ram,1 cold cathode light, 2 fans, 1 cddrive and 1 120gb hdd. Booted up, lights and all, then it starts smoking... Not sure what actually was smoking though. the PSU still worked on an older pc so I dont think the psu's at fault. the MOBO is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138112 Which I had to send back once already cause it was dead, and I think that was the problem. does that mean my cpu and ram are dead too?.. cause Im getting a new MOBO hoping to solve this problem. Update now my motherboard turns on, everything runs perfectly just still a blank screen. everytime I turn it on my monitors led changes from red to green for about 3 seconds and then goes back to red. That should indicate something right. is it possible my CPU was fried when my mobo started smoking but my mobo itself is ok? the only burn mark I can find is a slight burn circle around one of the screw holes (I guess the screw was in to tight or something). anyways, Is it possible that my Motherboard is still ok and the cpu somehow fried? Question 1: The motherboard standoffs: are there any extra ones that might be contacting the back of the mainboard PCB and shorting stuff out? Question 2: Who told you Thermaltake makes good power supplies? Question 3: Smell the parts: do any of them have an ozone smell to them? Question 4: Try this: Unplug everything not needed for post (hard drives, lights, CD Drive, expansion cards), both from the mainboard & the power supply...Just one stick of ram, CPU & cooler, mainboard, power supply (don't even hook up the case lights/switches except the power button). Still no picture?
1. A standoff is a screw right? (kinda a noob) if so no, but one screw left a burnt ring around on of the motherboard screw holes. 2. I just looked at the reviews.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023 3. yes the motherboard and psu both smell but the psu worked in another computer so I think its the motherboard.. 4. tried it... the monitor changes from red to green for about 3 seconds then turns back red.. no luck.. Im starting to think I should just get a whole new brand.. the first biostar motherboard was DOA and the rma one catches starts smoking the partially dies.. Can someone give me a good Am2 motherboard link. thank you for your help
Sorry, the "standoff" is the thing behind the mainboard that the screw goes into. "but one screw left a burnt ring around on of the motherboard screw holes." - Sounds like a short circuit of some kind. If there is nothing metalic touching the back, it almost has to be the mainboard itself...unless you are using screws with very large heads. Did you read the reviews for your power supply? "...the powersupply began smelling with a burning chemical stench. Needless to say I have to replace this hunk of junk now." ...and... "...and when I turned it on, it smelt as if it was ready to catch fire and the system wouldn't even post." PSU still works I just didnt even know what a standoff was let alone use them.. most likely a short from the MOBO being directly on the case...
That's correct, using standoffs is absolutely essential or the motherboard's electrical connections all short together via the case.
