Hey Currently using a NEC ND-3500 and 3520 drives and I'm very happy with their performance with CDs and DVDs. However I can only burn DL DVDs at 2.4x and in some cases 4x and I want to be able to use 8x media. What burner would you recommend for burning newer DL media?
Wow, someone who read the sticky - hopefully it helped you. As for your question, what you are trying to do is not adviseable. Burning DL media above 2.4x can causing burning errors. Regardless of media speed, it is said that you should burn no higher than half the rated speed, as a rule of thumb - eg, 16 media = burn at 8x. I'm not much of a DL burning guy, but I haven't seen too many people burning 8x DL discs @ 4-8x. Having said that, burning too slow (with any media) can also cause errors.
Yeah if there's one thing I've learnt on the forums over the years its 'always read the stickys!' I wasn't planning on burning the 8x media at 8x probably just at 4-6 maybe even 2.4. Its just that the local shop near me only sells 8x media at ~80p/disc OR 2.4 Verbs at £2 /disc! A bit too expensive just for film b/ups. Just thought it would be more economical to buy a new burner than pay the extra price.
What brand are the 8x? If they're not Verbatim, then most likely you will be wasting your money on them anyway.
Stick to Verbs. Pay the bit extra and get decent DVDs or pay less and get coasters - that's how it is.
Yeah looks like I'll have to. SVP have them for £1.60ea so its not too bad. I know about verbatims high quality, I switched to the 16x single layer discs a few months ago and I havent looked back. I even trust them enough to buy 400 at once.
