I am by no means a computer whiz and I know you guys are all pretty much well knowledged with things dealing with computers so I wish to ask for your help. I have been debating whether or not to buy a new computer or if I should just build a custom computer. I've heard that building a custom computer can be cheaper so I have been looking into that....but I have no idea where to start. All of the motherboards and memory stuff just doesn't make much sense to me. Although a ballpark of around $700 isn't much, I was wondering if I could build a nice computer with this memory. Also, I want to throw in that CS:S will be exclusively played on this computer so I want a pretty decent video card. Thanks for you help guys!

Your video card will take a big bite out of your $700.00.

I have my PCs built by these guys. I probably spend about 10% more but the performance is outstanding.
Try their "build your own computer" feature on their website. It's interesting. You can mix and match parts and pieces. Try a Google search for some of the parts.

Building your own computer is great but the tech support can suck.

building a computer is a lot easier than ppl would have you believe.

what i recomend is browsing say pc world or your american equivalent.

for the computer you would most like.
taking into account what you want it for.

next go on the web and price up the same parts (or there equivalents)
you should find it will be considerably cheaper to build yourself.

plus the added bonus is if you already have a monitor you save money on that. and any other stuff you have e.g you can recycle your hard drive, keyboard, mouse. bearing in mind that if there s*** you probably will want to replace them eventually.

anyway when you have one you like

post up the specs i'm sure ppl here would help you out with changing things if you havn't got it quite right

    hope this helps

i mean a simple pc with specs like this is good:
Pentium 4: 3GHZ Processor (With HT technology if possible)
512MB Ram (if u have extra money left over 1GB will be nice)
Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT 256MB Graphics card - this is a really good graphics card but will cost about $130. (if u want a cheaper one than get a Nvidia Geforce 5200 128MB graphics card only $40 - and it plays the latest games with no problem)

depending on how much space u need, i would usually get a 160GB hard-drive at least. Some people dont really need that much space.

If u want the ultiamate machine customize it and maybe wait another year where u can save up more money and get the best pc out with:
    Pentium 4: 3.8 GHZ processor
    2GB Ram
    512mb graphics card.

    anyway hope this helps
