    Hi,
I have a Toshiba 5205-S703 with DVD Burner (model #SD-R6012). Recently, I've had problems with burning dvd's and after several discussions/ support calls/ etc. I've concluded that my dvd-burner is dying slowly so I should replace it. (the topic was discussed @ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/143504#759239)

Now the problem is that, I'd like to get a new internal dvd-burner bur i'm not sure which models will be compatible with my notebook. I called toshiba but the very few models they have are not compatible with my machine. they suggested that i took my notebook to a service center and they'll take of it but i'm not so thrilled with this option. What I would like to know is if there are some guide lines to follow to pick a new dvd-burner (internal), like connections, pins, size, etc. I think to go with another toshiba product would be the safest but as they've told me they don't carry a compatible device.

Or maybe I should consider an external drive?? (which I'm very unwilling to)

Anyway, if there's anything you can suggest me, any info on internal drives, or any websites to check on the subject matter, I'd really appreciate that.
    thanks

external has worked for me u wiil need a seperate power point for the case try and get a usb 2 compatable one or firewire one people will tell u
that external is 2 slow its a crock! i can encode
a movie in under a hour some can take 30min as long as have usb 2. U might need to get a usb 2 card for
ur laptop or u will be looking at times at 2 hours
    to encode a movie.

    hi

i myself have the satellite 5205-s705 and i find myself in the same predicament as yours.

The idea that I have in mind is to replace my SD-r6012 with either the SD-R6472 or the TS-L532L.

i too am concerned about the compatibility however there is no info on the net. so i'll probably buy the drive, try it, and if it doesn't work, sell it.

did you call toshiba? they said none of what they had at hand would solve my problem, at the time.

well, in the meantime, i bought an external, firewire lacie dvd burner which works great now. that wasn't my preference but now i'm happy with the choice.

    good luck.
