The price of these have really plummeted so I thought it's about time I replaced my CD.

    I'm in the N.W. of England and a Online retailer has a local store counter selling the following Dual Layer recorders;

    LG GSA-4167
    NEC ND-3550
    Samsung TS-H552U

All are under £28:00 could you please recommend one above the others and if possible the media it works best with.

    Thank, Swog.

    Hi,
Of those three I'd go with the LG. For media either MCC or Taiyo Yuden.

Thanks for your quick replies guys.

As I'm going for it on Friday can you comment on 2 more recorders in the price range.

The first is an NEC ND-4550, is this an improvement on the ND-3550 ?
    The second is a Lite-on SHW-160P6S.

Does your original recommendation of the LG GSA-4167 still come out on top?

    Hi.
The 4550 & the the 3550 are to all intensive purposes the same drive. Only firmware really differs. I wouldn't bother with Nec over LG (unless it was the 4571a & it's a bit early to assess this drives true capability).
The Lite-On SHW-160P6S is one of the first drives to make use of Lite-Ons' Hypertuning & Overspeed. An exciting prospect, but still early days (if scanning is a consideration, then this drive is out on its own when compared to others in this thread). Therefore the only drive to consider as Necs' are at best very poor scanners. The LG just doesn't scan in terms of disc quality.
In short the LG will give excellent results with the best of media. The Lite-On is potentially the drive, but no-one knows yet whether it will deliver. Hypertuning & Overspeed giving the BenQ 1640/1650/1655 a run for its money is as yet only a theory waiting to be proved.

I personally have both an LG and a NEC 3550A. I love them both. Excellent results with either drive.

Thanks '9mmruger1' and ' zebadee' again for your detailed answer.

All things taken into account i'll be picking up the LG tomorrow, and when you concider its almost half the price i paid for a CD recorder less than 3 yrs ago, it really looks a bargain.

    Cheers again, Swog. ;)
