I'm going to be building a complete new system in december with finacial aid from my company. I'd like to upgrade my current system in the meantime but don't want to spend more than $150.- or thereabouts, on a new motherboard and cpu. I'm looking at the AMD Athlon XP 2400 Thoroughbred , socket A, Op. Feq. 2.0 Ghz with the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard. Does this sound like a decent set up for a combined total of $170.-? Any advice appreciated. Thank you.
Sounds like a good set up to me, but you may have difficulty getting Athlon processors now as they have stopped making them. I recently fitted a new Sempron 2400 to an Asus motherboard for one of my neighbours. Overclocked it straight away by increasing the fsb to 400 and it now runs at sempron 2800 spec. My god, the sempron is a fast processor. For the money, I would say it is awesome and better than the Athlons.
