    Hello Everyone.

Just posting here for the newbies, since i remember what it was like; how confusing it was at times when info contradicted itself and when there were no screenshots.
Well, i tried to create a solution, a nice detailed guide on dvd-9 to dvd-5 backing up.

I redid the main page and look of it..

still getting about a 100hits a day, drop me some feedback about what ya think..

    Guide looks great Seamonkey :)

Just a quick question- I have followed your guide for ripping. I used the highlighted files and added VIDEO_TS.IFO to the list. The movie Im backing up is 'The Sweetest thing' but after ripping, it doesnt look like I have all the files. Heres my list after following your guide:
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VTS_02_0.IFO
    VTS_10_0.IFO
And the VOBS i have are
    VTS_10_1 - 1GB
    VTS_10_2- 1GB
    VTS_10_3- 1GB
    VTS_10_4- 800MB

Im not sure your ripping guide explains in enough detail the files that should be included in the rip. Any pointers on where I went wrong?

I went onto the VOB step- I had 4 Diff VOB files and they only had (ID=1) for each file and that contained the movie and no sound, so I take it Ive made a mistake in the ripping process.

    Thanks

are you putting a check next to the "create new ifo files", "correct original ifo files"? cuz the when you rip it the first time (strip the audio streams that you don't want and the subtitles you don't need and vob ids), it should create these files (you might have more .VOB files than this, if your movie is longer/larger):
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB

are you making sure you have the VOB Extra Options menu setup just like in the pic?

    Let me know what happens..

Thanks Seamonkey, I ended up getting the disc to work by manually deleting all of the extras. It ended up being 3.8GB. Wohoo, my first disc worked. Your guide is fantastic. Thanks for all your help and input =)

good to hear davee, you have now passed the first and most difficult task of becoming a ripper (is that the correct term?)

Ok, this is way off topic, but what do or should we call ourselves (us, being people who make backup copies of dvds, games, cds, etc..)???

we aren't piraters (well, most of us aren't; most of us seem to have integrity) or hackers (i guess in a way we are)... are we rippers? or are we backuppers (that one is pretty weak sounding) or we 'f#$k the DMCA'ers'? hehe...

seriously, i am feeling sick and dizzy from not knowing which cyber social group i belong too..

    okay, i got it question/poll..

what should the realm of cyberculture and media that we part take in be called or is there already a name for us??

Your question about what to call us made me start thinking about all the titles I already carry, ie: Husband, Father, Lover, Network Tech, PC tech, Programmer, Car Repairman, General Laborer, Landscaper, Dishwasher, Superman (not really but the kids think so), etc, etc, etc... I don't know if I want another one. ;)

    ANOTHER UPDATE:

Redid the DVD index page and made navigation easier through the guide.

Gettting PS2 soon, a modding and backing up guide will be added if there is enough interest.
Anyone have any suggestions for the modchip i should get?

    UPDATE: Feb 2, 2002.

    Well, my site at http://www.geocities.com/daseamonkey420
is getting too many hits and has exceeded its bandwith allocation at geocities, so it might be down from time to time, but...

i've now made two alternative seperate sites:

    -DVD Backups-
    http://www.geocities.com/seamonkeyguides/

    -Xbox Matrix/Modding-
    http://www.geocities.com/xboxmodded/

i'll be updating both soon, so they work together nicely, any comments ideas... let me know..
i'll also be updating both my guides.. i am changing some stuff around and rewording a few sections (based on questions i get via email about the dvd and xbox sections), i WILL NOT be adding TMPG section (it takes me longer to transcode this way, than with RMPEG2), i'll also add more info about xbox modding..

as you can see, i got some Free time!!
aiy, hope that helps all ya newbies out!!
    peace

I have made 3 coasters from the 6 pack of DVD-R I bought. I used the SmartRipper 2.4 to rip "Office Space" and used Nero 5.5.9.14 to burn it and received no errors. It burned fine, and won't play in my DVD player. It says it's a disk error. Is there a problem with Memorex media, or should I upgrade to Nero 5.5.9.17 and try again? I believe I saw the version 17 Nero on one of the links so I will d/l that later. Lend me your thoughts. Being a newbie sux!!! Thanks for your time!

re: trashman: what kind of media are you using? have you tried other types of media and have tried the disc on anotehr dvd player?

re: acemecca: i used the memerox dvd+r and dvd+rw discs, they seem fine for me... i used to use smartripper but dvd decrypter is pretty smooth for ripping the dvd... i've heard nero burn v5.5.10.0 has problems burning video dvds, but i used to use v5.5.9.17 and had no problems. however, they never played in my xbox. I use RecordNow Max and those dvds i burn DO PLAY IN MY XBOX :) so let me know what happens after you upgrade...

Seamonkey. well lets see, let me look at my dead pile and see what I have...... Maxell, Memorex HP Fuji, same thing with all of them.... DVD+RW will play just fine, DVD+R locks up... and I got the NS715 from Sony that everyone says can take what ever you throw at it. It is being burned on a HP200i and I have Nero 5.5.10...even tried on an old copy of Nero 5.5.9....

Maybe God hates me I dont know

I used SmartRipper 2.41 to rip it, then I used Ifoedit to crrect the sectors. Nero 5.5.10.7 to make the DVD and presto....it worked finally. That will work for the single layer DVDs. Any advice on the Dual Layer DVDs like Bourne Identity?
