I am wanting a telephoto lens for my Nikon d80. I have a zoom lens 18 x 135 and want to be albe to take wildlife pics ( deer). What is a good lens, but not too expensive....

I would look into the 100-300mm zoom range...... but some are very expensive. you also have to consider if you want Nikon lenses or ones that are made for Nikon but are from different manufacturers. Here are some shots I took with my Canon 30D with my 28-300mm UltraSonic II lense:

the above pictures were taken this past weekend with the exception of the baseball picture which was taken 2 weeks ago!

AWESOME PICS! They are an inspiration for me. I bought a Tamron 75 to 300 mm lens. I know you get what you pay for, this was only 109.00 but i hope to use it for wildlife pictures. I think I will have to use a tripod though. For some reason, i can hold the camera still enough when zoomed. Do you think there is a lens in the 5 to 6 hundred dollar range that would be good for the camera, where i might not have to use a tripod? Thanks to any who might reply.

here are my lenses...... I only have 2 for my Canon 30D.....it's all I need:

each lens comes with the IMAGE STABLIZER that you don't need a tripod! see the little horny toad..... taken with my large zoom lens! perfect all the time! the only thing is that the 28-300 is $2,500.00 and the other wide angle zoom is now $1,500.00! I am not a professional photographer... it's just a hobby of mine.

here's some good ones I just did..... photo stitched these babies:

Very nice job on the photostitch. I took a class when I got my camera at our local college on Digital Cameras. I now am learning Photoshop C2. It is lots of fun! By the way, very nice lens.....
