    Hello!

I have a Nintendo DS Lite that I bought in January and a couple weeks ago it refused to work properly.

Here's the problem: When you turn on the DS, the intro Nintendo "welcome screen" comes on and then it powers off to an orange light. I've tried charging it but it just stays orange (normally, the green light comes on after a couple hours or so).

Note: my baby brother was found drooling on the display and keys before it "died".

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

With the charger plugged in, can you power up and play?

Take the battery out and make sure everything looks good. Try to power it up on AC without the battery.

Put the battery back in. Any changes?

    snorlaxx22,

Currently, with the charger plugged in, the orange light in on but no power to the screen or system when you switch it to "on".

Without the charger, there's no power and no orange light. It seems almost dead.

If you feel brave then I would look at fuse 2

Take the back off the ds lite and F2 is next to the card slot, they are all surface mount components so you will need a multimeter to test it.

As a general rule, faults on the Ds fall into a few easy to rectify issues, the remainder are a new board!

    1) no charging - F1 blown
    2) Green light comes on for 2-3 secs one of the screens flash and it goes off, bad connection or screen (on the one that does not flash)
    3) Green light comes on and stays on nothing on screens, faulty WiFi board
    4) Nothing happens at all F2 blown.

If the fuse has blown (use google and there are loads of photo's showing the position of the fuses as they have changed with each board design. First remove the fuse and bridge it with solder (if it smokes the board you have still lost nothing) if the unit now works then replace the fuse, it is a type0603 500ma surface mount (they are even on eBay - but obviously at a price) If anything goes wrong again and you have left the solder bridge it can carry on - the worst none I have seen is a unit that started to melt the plastic

Thanks kittymat! I'll give it a try!

(by the way, Are F1 and F2 fuses the same or different?)

Okay, I finally bought the replacement fuse and I desoldered the bad F2 fuse off and I resoldered the new one in. (Goodness, it was hard work because the darn thing was super tiny.)

After putting everything back together (including a new battery - just in case) the DS remained unchanged, plugged into the wall charger. The green light would come on for 2 seconds with a white flash on the bottom screen and then it would turn itself off, back to an orange light. If I unplugged the DS from the wall charger, there would seem to be no power (no green or orange light).

Now, I would like to know, if the DS is still salvageable if I attempt to bridge the fuse as a last resort. Any help is appreciated!

    Whoa!!

Last time it was coming up with the welcome screen, now the screen flashes after a couple of seconds??

The DS goes thro a test routing on switch on, the fact that it is flashing the bottom screen but not the top suggests a problem with the top screen or the connection to it.

    1) poor connection in the connector, refit and retry
    2) a faulty screen cheap to replace $12 or so - try dealextreme.com takes a couple of weeks but cheap enough and free postage

It can be - but not exclusively

After the WiFi board you are into replacing the motherboard, anything else gets very difficult.
