I have Nero 8 installed and just recently when trying to make a DVD using Nero Vision the files don't have any sound, I don't have a clue why this is because it was working fine before.
I also tried copying stuff onto a Data DVD earlier on and it failed twice for no apparent reason but I don't think the 2 are connected as I hadn't tried burning anything with Nero Vision when I noticed the lack of audio.

I didn't save any log files but the same thing happened when I tried another program. I think it might be related to when I installed Quicktime Alternative, that seems to be when the problems started but they're still there now I've removed it.
These are the codec or codec packs I have installed:
    ffdshow
    XviD 1.1.3
I also have Real Alternative installed.

Well I don't get error messages when using Nero Vision and I didn't with the other program, it's just that many of the video files don't produce audio. You see with Nero Vision I do the testing(so that's why there wouldn't be a log file for it) for the menus and that lets me know whether they'll be sound for each file, I tried with some different files today and only one had audio working with the program, it was an .avi file most other file types don't seem to work to make DVDs with their audio any more. Strange thing is I used the trial version of TMPGEnc DVD Author v3.1.1.174 and when I tested the simulation for the menus the sound worked but the end product didn't. I went back to a System Restore point before I installed Quicktime Alternative but that didn't help so I figure I might try uninstalling and reinstalling some codecs and see if that helps but since I've already went over my download limit for this month(meaning at the moment my Internet speed is rather slow) I'll wait until next month to do that.
I don't know if TMPGEnc DVD Author v3.1.1.174 produces a log but it's probably not on my computer any more because I uninstalled it and then went back to a previous Restore Point.

Programs like Real Alterative and VLC play most files fine(except I usually need to choose one program to play certain formats but I think that's normal), so basically this doesn't seem to be related to Nero Vision at all.

install k-lite mega codec pack and try another test...

you may have codecs to play but not compress decompress / convert...

could also use GSPOT on a file that does work and one not working see if audio is the same to start with

like AC3 or mp3 or DTS audio etc...

I installed(well almost) the codec pack you mentioned and it wanted me to uninstalled XviD, ffdshow and Real Alternative but just when it was about to finish installing it threw up a bunch of pop ups telling me formats were broken and such, I'm now worried I've screwed the thing up more. Links to images of the pop ups follow(there were so many it made more sense to not embedded them in this post). There was so many I included as many as I could bother with and I said yes to remove those entries and the others I didn't give links to pics for here.

Again only certain files are working for Nero Vision and the ones that seemed to screwed up, since the log file is so big and currently my Internet connection is slow I'll wait until next month to post it. However doing a quick test with some other files shows that again it doesn't seem to be a Nero related problem.

Well you might get a better insight when I post that log file.
I'll post it around 1st May or sometime around that.

When you say you've never seen that before, were you talking about the images of the messages I linked to in one of my posts?

So do you have any suggestions besides reinstalling Windows or doing a Repair Windows?

Yeah I know I should probably do that I intend to eventually but I haven't got a backup hardrive so I'd need to use a whole bunch of DVDs and it's a real pain. I've already done that a few times since I got this computer and I'll probably just stuff something up again.

For now I'll just let the issue go and work around it but thanks for the help.

    Free physical memory: 76MB (78584kB)
    Memory in use : 69 %

reboot pc fresh, then burn at 6x

see if that helps. dont touch pc while burning it cant cope.

Well I've went back to Nero 7 and things are fine. I've used Nero Vision lots of times and even with my low system specs when I have it set to really low or Normal, depending on how much else I'm doing on the computer there generally hasn't been a problem but I do realise I need to update my computer, I'm probably going to next year.

As for the firmware upgrade, I am very cautious about those because if you stuff it up your drive can be become unworkable and from what I heard it could be permanently not working. So unless I really feel the need I like to avoid such things.

My DVD writer is playing up, this time it doesn't want to burn things but plays them fine. Anyway I read the instructions for the firmware update and it says no other devices connected to the second IDE cable, I have another device that is broken anyway set to the slave on that cable. Would uninstalling it do or do I actually need to remove the whole drive for it to work. If the latter is true I can't realistically use it as I can barely get my computer open with the tiny screws used for its box. I looked for the latest driver update for my drive but couldn't find it, I realise it would be old but not as old as the one I'm currently using, is there anyway to find it?
