Hello everyone, I seem to have another problem with my super-(hardware)-setup. On ASUS P5B Deluxe Wifi/AP I have two Raptors on SATA1 and SATA2 working in RAID0 on Intel ICH8R. Subject for discussion: Optiarc AD-7170S, which is - as you know SATA, and attached to SATA4 port. Problem 1: in bios once you select "SATA mode" RAID, you loose all details on physical drives. Meaning I cannot change DMA and PIO for DVD-drive in bios. Problem 2: since in order to use RAID, Windows installs iastor.sys, the "ATAPI..." node in the device manager is not present. So all suggestions regarding enabling DMA are not valid for me. Moreover, I cannot even see DMA status in applications. There are no problems as such, just before booting from DVD PC hangs for 5 seconds, which is a little annoying, but not critical (I don't do system install every day). Started to think about this (potential) problem after Nero 8 damaged 2 DVD9 +R's during an attempt to create a UDF DVD (write error). Question: does this matter at all? Shall I look for a solution? What do you think, experts? Any opinion appreciated. -- Yakor
Thanks! Below is Nero log (full!). Remark: while trying to burn the disks I still had 1.00 firmware (for AD-7170S). After I had upgraded to 1.82, I never tried to re-burn the same compilation (4.5 EUR per try is too expensive in a marginal sense ====== *** Nero Burning ROM, History File *** ====== Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 8.1.1.0 Internal Version: 8, 1, 1, 0 Recorder: <Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S> Version: 1.00 - HA 1 TA 0 - 8.1.1.0 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default CD-ROM: <Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S >Version: 1.00 - HA 1 TA 0 - 8.1.1.0 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 === Scsi-Device-Map === DiskPeripheral : RAID0_SYS iaStor Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On DiskPeripheral : RAID0_DAT iaStor Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off CdRomPeripheral : Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S iaStor Port 0 ID 2 DMA: Off CdRomPeripheral : HB9101T DDO738M 1.0 ayt774x5 Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off === CDRom-Device-Map === Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S H: CdRom0 HB9101T DDO738M I: CdRom2 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: WriteBufferSize: 83886080 (0) Byte BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 2047MB (2096204kB) Free physical memory: 1066MB (1091616kB) Memory in use : 47 Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 2.10.2007 UDF compilation 04:45:33 #1 Text 0 File SCSIPTICommands.cpp, Line 450 LockMCN - completed sucessfully for IOCTL_STORAGE_MCN_CONTROL 04:45:33 #2 Text 0 File Isodoc.cpp, Line 6671 UDF document burn settings ------------------------------------------ Determine maximum speed : FALSE Simulate : FALSE Write : TRUE Finalize CD : FALSE Multisession : TRUE Multisession type: : Start multisession Burning mode : DAO Mode : 1 UDF Mode : pure UDF Options : automatic UDF Revision : 1.02 UDF Partition Type : physical 04:45:34 #3 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3530 Turn on Disc-At-Once, using DVD media 04:45:35 #4 Text 0 File FilesystemSettingsValidator.cpp, Line 142 FS Settings: using validator 'CUDFSettingsValidatorDVD' ParamMode = 'automatic', changing UDF partition type from 'physical' to 'physical' Changing UDF revision from '1.02' to '1.02' 04:45:35 #5 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 307 Last possible write address on media: 4173823 (927:30.73, 8151MB) Last address to be written: 4048351 (899:38.01, 7906MB) 04:45:35 #6 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 319 Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD) 04:45:35 #7 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2972 Recorder: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S, Media type: DVD+R DL Disc Manufacturer ID: <RICOHJPN>, Media Type ID: <D01>, Product revision number: 67 Disc Application Code: 0, Extended Information Indicators: 3 04:45:35 #8 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 493 >>> Protocol of DlgWaitCD activities: <<< ========================================= 04:45:35 #9 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 785 Setup items (after recorder preparation) 0: TRM_DATA_MODE1 () 2 indices, index0 (150) not provided original disc pos #0 + 4048352 (4048352) = #4048352/899:38.2 relocatable, disc pos for caching/writing not required/ required -> TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048, config 0, wanted index0 0 blocks, length 4048352 blocks [H: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S] -------------------------------------------------------------- 04:45:39 #10 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 986 Prepare [H: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S] for write in CUE-sheet-DAO DAO infos: ========== MCN: "" TOCType: 0x00; Session Closed, disc not fixated Tracks 1 to 1: Idx 0 Idx 1 Next Trk 1: TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048/0x00, FilePos 0 0 8291024896, ISRC "" DAO layout: =========== ___Start_|____Track_|_Idx_|_CtrlAdr_|_____Size_|______NWA_|_RecDep__________ 0 | lead-in | 0 | 0x41 | 0 | 0 | 0x00 0 | 1 | 0 | 0x41 | 0 | 0 | 0x00 0 | 1 | 1 | 0x41 | 4048352 | 0 | 0x00 4048352 | lead-out | 1 | 0x41 | 0 | 0 | 0x00 04:45:39 #11 Text 0 File SCSIPTICommands.cpp, Line 240 SPTILockVolume - completed successfully for FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME 04:45:39 #12 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 4316 Caching options: cache CDRom or Network-Yes, small files-No (<64KB) 04:45:39 #13 Phase 24 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1764 Caching of files started 04:45:39 #14 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 4435 Cache writing successful. 04:45:39 #15 Phase 25 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1764 Caching of files completed 04:45:39 #16 Phase 36 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1764 Burn process started at 8x (11,080 KB/s) 04:45:39 #17 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 2735 Verifying disc position of item 0 (relocatable, disc pos, no patch infos, orig at #0): write at #0 04:45:39 #18 Text 0 File DVDPlusDualLayer.cpp, Line 671 L0 Data Zone Capacity not set. Hi ;-) Not too familar with your mobo. But a lot of folk have problems with the Intel ICH8R. For ODD's to work properly you cannot use RAID of any kind. Doesn't the bios let you select individually? If you cannot do this, then you would have to consider a PCI SATA controller card. This shouldn't be necessary as it would be all over the net by now.
Trying to burn at the max rate for the media and the writer is your problem. Also the media you have is not the best. Which, if you are paying the price for dual layer, stick ewith the best. Check the rating on your media. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmediadvdridsearch=RICOHJPND01 Compare to these. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmediadvdridsearch=MKM.....003 http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmediadvdridsearch=MKM.....001 Burn at half the media's rated speed is the rule for burning. If your firmware is old stay away from the max speed on newer meida.
56delray Thanks for comments and encouraging. However, I didn't quite get the cavils from your last post. You seem to critisize the media I've chosen (quote: "Also the media you have is not the best"). At the same time the link you provide gives the following rating to it: Plays on 1 DVD Players Plays not on 0 DVD Players Burn Reliability is Good DVD Reliability is Good PC Reliability is Good Console Reliability is N/A Which is the best in the first link among the 13 listed there (together with BENQ, which has absolutely the same qualities as my TDK) and the 3rd among all provided links (yielding only to Verbatim and Dynex, which I've never seen, by the way). Was it a mistake or did you want to say something else? You might be right. I thought differently, becasue some time ago I've read another materials (numerous), which stated that burning at lower speeds might be even worth. Shall I really stick to this rule? As you have seen, I have 1.82 now, which cannot be newer. Can I burn at max speed from now on? Still, the question remains: what to do with DMA and shall I really consider an option of buying a third-party RAID card so that to let my SATA Optiarc rest on normal IDE channel? zebadee mobo is quite widespread, as well as its problems This is something new to me. This mobo has also a J-Micron RAID controller, which, though, is designed to work with one external SATA drive. Before going to integrated Intel's RAID, I've read thousand of opinions, which helped me decide in favor of ICH8R. Could you, perhaps, clarify or give links what exactly problems people refer to? --Yakor
Hi ;-) As I said not too familiar with your mobo, only that folk have problems with ICH8R. Not sure what. But I do seem to recall that many are told to use the J-Micron RAID controller. So must be something relating to switching from one to the other. Anyway I still feel that my understanding that ODD's won't function properly if RAID is selected is correct.
OK guys, The "DMA-RAID" problem has been partially solved. Found an "original" way out: attached DVD drive to the only on-board connector of J-Micron SATA/PATA controller and set it in AHCI mode. Now there is no delay when booting from DVD! However, in device manager, it's DMA 2. And according to some posts in this forum it should be 4. I can't control this in BIOS, since it's now JMicron's responsibility. Shall I try to burn that unlucky session again? -- Yakor
Write speeds for the 7170. DVD+,-R:18x max. DVD-RW:6x max. DVD +RW:8x max. DVD+,-R DL:8x max. Now say in the future they have 16x DL media. You still might not want to burn at 8x with a older writer and firmware. As to the links: The first link for RICOHJPN D01. Which is what you have no matter who's name is on the label. There are 15 comments of poor burn reliabilty, 3 mixed and 7 good. The next link for MKM003 8x media has 12 good comments. The last link for MKM01 2.4x media has 6 mixed and 157 good comments. Of these choices the best results are from the 2.4x DL media. Now this may be different for other writers. The worst writers are OEM versions because the firmware is not updated as new media invented. So good bet would be to burn MKM003 at 4x. The safe bet would be MKM01 at 1x or 2.4x.
56delray, New firmware, another SATA, ISO session, result = the same! Just spoiled another media. Followed your advise, recoded at 4x. The stall happens somewhere in the middle. Cannot get to second layer?? I paste the log below. Sent a request to Nero, but they seem to be also puzzled. The Fuji might work better depending on the media code. There are two DVD-9s from Fuji. One good and one mixed. You could run the burn thur a Nero Simulation burn and not waste a blank. Otherwise I am out of ideas. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?d...rder=Name&hits=50&search=Search+or+List+Media edit If it is the good Fuji that you have and it fails the sim, I will seek help for some AfterDawn Addict's.
56 delray, You were right. It's the media. How can it be, whom shall I blame now? TDK? Send them back the media? Or NEC and Sony (or my local shop) requiring a replace of DVD drive? I'd still like to come back to the original topic: DMA and ATAPI controller. As I said before, now my AD-7170S is on JMicron SATA/PATA controller in AHCI mode. I tried different combinations: without installing JMicron drivers (in this case CD-ROM was on ATAPI Channel 0, with DMA enabled) and with installing JMicron driver (after this, the DVD drive is recognized as an SCSI device, and DMA option disappears in ATAPI Channel properties window as well as the whole drive moves nowhere, i.e. it is no longer under ATAPI Channel 0) Many thanks for advises, -- Yakor
56delray, It did work!!. Media ID "RITEK D01". I checked it thoutoughly with DVDInfo - all perfect. If this was possible!! I wouldn't have wasted so many. Simulation cannot be performed on DVD+R media. Btw, simulation option is also available in ImgBurn, so Nero is kind of... useless? -- Yakor
I do not use Nero much so I do not know that about the sim. I'm old school. I still use Decrypter to burn. Good luck!
