I've got a v1.0 xbox that will not power on. I've checked the PSU for signs of wear and tested the fuse for continuity. It looks ok. When the power button is pressed, the fan on my GPU spins up for half a second and then dies. My next thoughts are to examine all the traces for corrosion on the MB. Any other suggestions?
Chunkhead, I read your tutorial and could not find any trace damage on the board. I went over as much of the board as I could and cleaned it up with alcohol and q-tips. Everything looks like its in good condition. All solder points seem solid and clean. I used a multimeter and tested the pins on my 12pin PSU connector. The standby (pin 6) has 3.3v and when the power OR eject button is pressed the voltage goes to 0v, pin 1 spikes toward 12v, pin 2&3 spike to near 5v. Makes me think the PSU might be ok, but I'm not 100% convinced of that. Do you have any suggestions on other ways to test the PSU? Or can you recommend a good PSU to buy? I was thinking of getting a used original PSU off ebay. Thanks for your help!
Before you buy stuff, see if you can borrow an Xbox and swap the PSUs. At least you can see if that's the issue! Sounds like a dead MB though...
Cool, well you know it's a dead PSU then! There is a tutorial for replacing the fuse in PSU in my tutorial section, but be careful if you do, read all the warnings I provide!
PSU fuse continuity is the first thing I checked and it looks good... even if I try to wiggle it, it's solid. I checked continuity on most of the other parts and everything seems to have a good connection. I'm not sure how else to test the PSU to find the broken part. I think at this point I'm ready to just toss it out.
