If you know the make and model of the motherboard (it's on the screen when you boot up and hit the pause key) go to the manufacturers site and look for sound drivers for your version of Windows.

Once you figure out what chip it uses (probably a realtek), you should go to the chip maker website and get the newer drivers....these should improve sound quality while reducing processor useage.

that would be just his audio chip.

If it is an OEM system, then you can find out what chip it has from the manufacturer's website.

If it was a homebuilt system; or made by a local builder; you can find out what mainboard it has, and then go to the website for that mainboard.

Come to think of it, it might be easier to just test out the latest version of both Realtek Audio drivers...they won't install if they won't work...and they will install & work for some chipsets made by other companies.
