I have Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition and now i've decided to refresh my system and start out with one of the 2006 security applications like Nortons or McAfee. I must say that i have been using nortons since 2002 and i have never had any problems with it, on the other hand i've been hearing that its not as good as it seems to be because it alters your registry more than you could possibly imagine and also hogs a good portion of your system performance. even though i was told this, im not sure if thats true or not but ive been hearing some good things about McAfee and im thinking about maybe changing to that for awhile. anyways i'll get to the point. I just want to see some of your opinions on which of these security suites would be the better choice and why? that would help me decide which one to buy.

    Thanks

for the love of god don't waste any more of your money on norton. it is the worst antivirus system out there, for multiple reasons. First, it costs money. Second, it uses more system resources than any other virus app. Third, it is a horrible virus detector. I used to use norton years ago, until I switched to a MUCH better (and free) virus program called AVG. Right away AVG found 9 viruses that norton never found...two of which were trojans!

McAfee is a little better than norton, but still not great. Don't waste your money on either. AVG 7 Free and AVAST are two excellent (and free) virus detectors.

As far as spyware/adware goes, use AdAware (also free). It has rid the world of more malware than all other spyware apps put together.

I know Nortons is a system hog. but saying AVG is better because it found 9 viruses that nortons did not would be foolish because there will always be another Antivirus program out there that can find something that yours won't.

AVG is great in some ways i agree. doesn't hog resources, is free and has decent security.

Nortons on ther other hand alters your registry beyond belief, sucks up all your performance, but has top notch security. you may think otherwise but like i said before. i have had nortons since 2002 and i have never had any problems with it even once. and those 9 viruses that may be on my computer don't bother me because what i do, it does not affect me in any way and hasn't for 3 years.

Ive read that PC-Cillen is very good to so i might go with that.

i've talked with many people about AVG and i dont know anyone who kept it in there system for over a year without problerms so i can't agree on the MUCH better part that you believe.

Oh hell no!!! Them are some fighting words. McAfee sucks!!!

And I'm not too impressed with the newer versions of Norton. I still use 2003 :)

    personally i can't stand either.

    i've used both.

mcaffe took me ages to configure.

it just wouldn't let me connect at all.

and nortons hogs all your resources.

i use ANTIvir for win XP

its free. doesn't hog your computer and i havn't had any problems with it at all. been using it for about 2 months

for my firewall i use zone alarm *also free*

    it does the job.

a little annoying with the pop ups mind

i've been using Mcafee at home and work for years, and since 8.0 came out it's very lean on resources. i personally detest the Norton equivalents myself

lol ... damn I can't find my gloves :(. Nah, I've just had problems with McAfee and friends who have had McAfee.

Norton I'm used to. AVG I've heard is excellent, Nephilim speaks highly of it .. shoot I even got a AVG Pro version off a torrent site just in case :). The only thing I didn't like about AVG is you had to update it everyday whereas Norton did it automatically or every week.

I use AVG 7 (free version) and it automatically updates every morning at 8 am, or whenever the computer boots up after that...

ESET anti-virus is the best. Not free but damn it even detected viruses avg-free missed.
Sygate firewall is best for software firewall other than that hardware such as a router rules.

That is the best anti-virus you can get. For many years it has been in the top 3 of all anti-virus programs is detection and removal. Regardless however, there truly isn't one definitive anti-virus that is 100%. The best and only way to ensure that all viruses get removed is by using multiple virus programs.... just keep in mind to only have 1 installed on your system at a time.

I personally use Norton Internet Security 2004 and have no issues at all with it. If you're using a router chances are you don't even need any software firewall if you're using a curent router that has a good built in hardware firewall.

McAfee i personally do not like because it is a pain sometimes to get updated as you usually have to connect to their website to download the updates depending on version unlike most of Symantec products where you can manually update them.

Sygate - ugh! - we have (at work) one or more of their products as well as the firewall stuff, it runs on each pc in the background, spying on what programs you run, how long you run them for etc etc; every now and then (as it's crap software - still don't think they cater for linux but i digress) it loses it's cloaking ability and the icon appears in the taskbar and you can snoop around and see what it's getting up to - great for the company but not good for you when you've left Winamp running too long or something.

Mcafee can do auto updates and manual updates too, or both.... has been like that over many versions..

As of lately I have been using kaspersky and dropped NIS cause it would not let play my games on line and would freeze my PC so I have been a little impressed but by Kaspersky but eh.

I have never any issues with Trojan viruses so I could not get into a debate of which antivirus is the best at removing this virus or that virus, so really the choice is yours.

OHH, just a side note NIS and Kaspersky has one of the best builtin firewalls out there.

I started out with McAfee many years and then switched to Norton because of the one button checkup feature. I have Norton's System Works 2005 and it's a real resource hog. In fact I went back to using the 2003 version for this reason. Lately however I have gotten really disenchanted with Norton's as it has been missing too many viruses. I still use it but I'm presently seeking an alternative. I found a 1 year free trial version of EZ antivirus and I'm running it on another computer. Will keep you posted.

I personally have used norton, macafee and AVG. AVG is too basic for me. I like some advanced functions with my antivirus software. Also, what company would be better at updating their virus database? a free service or one you have to pay for? That is why im agianst free virus software. Macafee wasn't any better than AVG. Took a long time to load and scan my HDD. Norton is what i prefer. Easy to set up. Alot of extra functions like auto protect that scans email, web pages and incoming D/L's. Right now i have Norton antivirus and zone alarm pro and ad watch. Together i never get virus', pop ups, ads, tracking cookies, spyware or restricted program access to the Inet. Works wonders for me. If you complain about it hogging resources just upgrade your crapper tank computer. W/ 2 gigs of ram and a dual core processor i never notice a difference. Windows xp 64loads in a few seconds even with all the junk o have at start up.
