I tried burning Bourne Identity with DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter and both didn't work. Assuming that it was a problem with the DVD files, I tried burning Zoolander and it wouldn't burn as well. This was the log of Nero that I got after it failed:

    hi aseb1986,

Welcome to AD...let me point out a few things I noticed:

not too bad but update to the latest version which is 6.6.016 but use the nero clean tool http://nero.com/us/Clean_Tools.html to uninstall the old version, reboot then install the latest one.

you are burning too close to the edge. Try keeping your project around the 4300mb size.

Turn your dma on using http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/DMA.html

burner doesn't like your choice of media try using verbatims on fuji (made in japan).

you have roxio and it causes conflict with nero sometimes. If you do not use it often i recommend deleting it from your system.

Try fixing some of the issues I pointed out and report back to us with the results.

Matt72, thanks for your advice. Before I did what you recommended I uninstalled and again installed nero onto my computer. Then, I tried burning a memorex DVD and it had no problems. However, I ran out of memorex DVDs and so I bought Sony DVDs. Again I tried to burn a DVD onto the Sony DVD and it gave me the error message. I am guessing that the Sony DVDs are not compatible with my drive. But before I do anything else, I want to be sure of this. How do I make sure that the Sony DVDs are infact not compatible with my drive.

thanks in advance for the response.

@aseb1986 - can we have another section of Nero log to confirm you've applied all the suggestions.

Also, from your log above -
    - aside from the fact that most media Memorex puts it's name to is utter atrocious rubbish, in this particular instance the burner isn't recognising the media correctly. This is similar to what your burner should be displaying about your media -
This means one of 2 things - your burner's firmware is out of date, annd thus doesn't know how to correctly identify/use this media. Or the other reason is that the firmware might be up to date albeit released too long ago, thus real new media might not be catered for in the firmware..

I called the people at HP and they told me that the media should work, so I don't want to get rid of my new DVDs just yet. Also, if I decide to return my blank DVDs, do you think Sam's Club will take them?
    Thanks for any responses.

That version of Nero is WAY old, you need to update to 6.6.16 version. That could be causing the problem.

Your drives firmware is way out of date.
Go to HP website and get the latest firmware for your drive I think its 1.72? Anyway that is why your burner is having problem with newer and better media Nero isn't the problem, but it wouldn't hurt to update that either. Your real problem is with your firmware.

First off, I would like to thank everybody for their responses, especially bbmayo...your advice almost worked. After I upgraded my firmware, I tried burning the DVD again, I burned about 80% of the DVD and then failed (which is 80% more than before). Any reasons why it failed? Unfortunately, the log of this attempt did not show up in the nero history log.

    Thanks again for any responses.

From the latest logfile you hadnt made any of the changes I had suggested further up the thread, then gone asking hp, whose advice about media is not relevant. You need to apply all the suggestions then look for latest section of log which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log

    hi aseb1986,

Sorry I was away from a computer for a few days but glad to see the legend bbmayo and nero-ologist creaky have chimed in. I neglected to mention the firmware because I didn't look @ the hp website as they tend to be stingy with allowing other sites to post their updates/ work on their systems. Anyway your in good hands once you get your firmware update you should be burning with no problems.

Oops forgot to mention memorex is not the greatest of media. Either you get a pack full of duds or they will deteriorate much quicker than lets say verbatim or fuji. I will say if it works for you and you are willing to risk a few months down the line having a backup no longer be viewable then go for it. Otherwise stick with reputable name brand.

*whispers taiyo yuden are the best as I leave.

    aseb,

Follow creakys suggestion sepecially about the DMA settings. All of Creakys suggestions are wise ones and should help you out there really is nothing more to add. What speed did you burn the last DVD at? A log file would be helpfull for sure ;-)
