I have been burning movies with Nero for a few months now, and I know what I am dong pretty well. But as of late The DVDs I shrink are taking about 42 minutes to burn while I am burning at 2.4x speed. The time that it always took before was 24 minutes. I was wondering what would be causing it to take so long. Also when I shrink the movie with DVD shrink it has taken noticeably longer to back up the disk as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are probably in PIO mode instead of DMA. Go to Device Manager find IDE channel, primary and secondary channel should be set to DMA or Ultra DMA. Try also to defrag your HD

My primary one is set to PIO because it says that DMA is not available and the secondary drive is on Ultra DMA, I am now going to try to defrag the hard drive

Your Primary setting isn't something you select, it's something you lost by having too many mistakes on that drive.

Go to your Primary and delete it altoghther, reboot your PC and allow it to find it again and you'll be re-set to DMA -

Don't be so quick to "blow off" advice unless you don't want any at all. Car.Mike gave you the correct answer -

If you're really good we welcome you here to help others -

And if you just got off on the wrong foot and maybe don't know quite so much, you're still welcome, just try to be a little cooler -

    cheers,

    Pete

I don't know what you were reading to think that I was blowing off advice. I was saying that I know how to burn the dvd's and use the shrink program well. If I wasn't open to advice then I would not have come on here, but I will try that deleting of the primary drive. I appreciate all help, and if I came across that I do not appreciate it, then I didn't mean to at all.
I have tried these things and the dvd is still burning at the time it should not be. I also burned a CD today and the time that it took to download was correct. This is very confusing to me why it the DVD takes twice as long to burn as it should, but a CD burns at the right amount of time.

Sorry, I got the impression that you knew pretty much everything and that you were going to leave your PIO setting but still wanted your time shaved -

Did you re-check your Primary IDE to make sure you were in the DMA mode now ?

Also, if you have been working with DVD Shrink for a couple of months, it's about time you went back and got the newest Shrink version. Also, as good as Nero is, it's still a bit "Flaky". Let's uninstall both DVBD Shrink and Nero, reboot to insure they are totally cleaned out and run Nero’s Cleaner program. http://www.nero.com/en/631938347293151.html.
Reinstall both, reboot after each is installed so that they can settle in as it were. (It's a good thing to do that with every program.)
THEN, after both are nice and comfy, let's download the Nero utilities Pack
    http://www.nero.com/en/631898242809219.html and run that.
Lastly, if you haven't done it in a while, why not run a registry checker and cleaner program (Now what are you expecting ?) like Nero’s.
    http://www.nero.com/en/631938356417810.html

That should put you back where you were when you first started.

    Cheers and peace,

    Pete

Don’t forget to run those programs every once in awhile :)
(Don’t forget to make sure you’re running your primary IDE in the DMA mode.)

Final thought, remember to always burn with high-grade media when backing up DVD’s. You’ve seen that your PC doesn’t work hard when you’re burning CD’s. Doing DVD’s is defiantly a different animal, you learned a good lesson, remember it.

I hate to say this but I did everything that you suggested and for some reason it is still burning at the same slow pace that it has been burning at as of late. If you have any more suggestions it would be greatly appreciated, but if not then thank you for the help you have given me.

The only thing I can add...... my first burner started burning slower just before it died. And the last 15 or so discs ended up showing a lot more artifacts on a stand alone player.

If you have the means you might want to try that burner in a friend's computer. If it does the same thing I'd take the burner in to be replaced/repaired if it's under warrenty.

I have a 3 year replacement plan on it, so I might just try to exchange it and get me an external drive.

Scuba's advice should have worked unless and I know this is a bit of a long shot, but did you recently install Intels application excelerator? If so uninstall it and then follow scuba's advice again. I ran across numerous sites with complaints about the application accelerator allowing only P10 settings. Did you follow Scuba's advice? If not do that first.

The only thing that I have downloaded around the time that it began running slow was one of those critical updates for Windows XP. I dont think that would have caused this to happen, but that is the only thing that I recently downloaded. Thank you all for your help.

I said it was a long shot. There are countless numbers of people that have had difficulties with the application causing their systems to recognize P10 only settings . I am also running it with no problems but that doesn't mean that he isn't experiencing difficulty with it. I did expereince difficulty using the application with a machine that I built a year ago.

quarrantine. After a lot of problems with v1.3.1 and with v1.4.1 with my Sony DRU 500a, I did a little investigating and trial and error uninstall and reinstall. I uninstalled almost every burning program I had, and I have most of what you all are familiar with, checked DMA settings etc. Nothing seemed to work. Well guess what? A few days earlier I had been attempting to verify DMA settings on my HDs and optical drives. Did a little search through MS knowledge base and on Intels site, as my DMA settings for my IDE controllers were grayed out, and I wanted to know why my optical drives were reporting PIO mode when I have an 845E chipset and 80 conducter cables, and the drive specs says UDMA 2 mode supported. After many hours I found that in order to access DMA settings under Win XP Pro, I needed to uninstall Intel's Application Accelerator. Which is interesting because most board manufacturers using Intel chipsets reccomend installing it, (I use Gigabyte and ASUS primarily in my boxes). All went well, and I was able to set for UDMA mode 2 in XP. No noticeable performance loss, (after setting to "Use DMA Mode If Available" and rebooting...HDS are Fast ATA 133 so are set to UDMA 5). Out of curiosity, I decided to leave Intel App Accelerator uninstalled, and went back to playing with DVDXCOPY 1.41, (1.3.1 never worked with Gear or Nero for me). Just to be safe I did a REGEDIT and removed all Nero, Ahead, 321, and DVDXCOPY references, careful if you don't feel comfortable doing this, REGEDIT reads find commands literally and will find the letters N-E-R-O in other keys as well! Rebooted, ran Norton Utilities to remove any errors from messing with the registry, rebooted and installed v1.41. Held my breath and voila! Installed perfectly. Did a burn of Sapce Jam (kids) and bingo..success. I was experiencing all of the problems listed here with Gear drivers, installs and even, gasp, a spontaeneous reboot after ripping and when DVDXCOPY went into burn mode. I still have problems when using Nero drivers in that my APEX machines won't play and error out, (although I can read them on my DVD drives). I did some experimenting and created a few image files (.img, and ISO) and mounted to a virtual DVD drive. DVDXCOPY opend right up and did it's thing no sweat with the Gear drivers. DVD Decrypter burned them fine and both played as well. Nero burned them, but again neither would play. Deffinitely seems to be Nero. I am using the latest version ans updates (legally). I reinstalled all of my other DV "tools", (those of you doing DV for some time are familiar with them). No conflicts and DVDXCOPY works perfectly (except for episodic DVDs, ie Band Of Brothers..doesn't recognize both angles apparently and assumes the largest is the main movie). Give it a try with uninstalling Intel Application Accelerator, if it works...great, if not go to the Intel site and download it again. Use Add/Remove programs/software in control panel to remove it. Peace out!

    Another perspective:
    http://www.thegline.com/win2k/issues/2002/2.html
"I am a system builder and got my first P4 system to build, a request from a client. It also was to have a TDK IDE CDRW. It was the 850 Intel Board, with Rambus and such.
"I installed, and put the IAA thing in as it had been released that week, among some small fanfare. Then I tried to use the burner, with not much success. After a few calls to TDK support (who were for the most part useless) I finally found someone who reminded me that in the 'advanced' tab of the IDE controllers in Device Manager (in 2000 and now XP) all CD devices are by default set to 'PIO only'. Setting it to 'DMA (if available)' makes a happy burner, still the case with the IDEs (especially the burn-proofs). Except I had to explain to him that there wasn't an 'advanced' tab. That is why I had forgotten; it wasn't there.
"To cut a long story short I uninstalled the IAA, the 'advanced' tab returned, and we all lived happily ever after. I have never used IAA since. Apparently it is just tweaked IDE drivers, though I only heard that at the time, and haven't been listening since! No one mentions it at all any more so I guess it never really caught on. Good thing really, as CD burner support is very important. Most CD devices are DMA now and as 2000 and XP still put them as PIO on install, they need switching over after install, so the fact that the ability to do so is removed stinks of stupidity, arrogance or stunning lack of care on Intel's part." -- Andy E.
I should comment that most if not all of the XP systems I've dealt with that had CD burners or DVD drives installed used Ultra DMA or DMA mode by default, not PIO.
At this point, I think it's safest to say that whatever benefits the Intel Application Accelerator confers on a system are outweighed by the hassle involved, and its presence in a system should be one of the first things to consider if said system is acting strangely. This goes double for XP systems, which have their own prefetching and optimization routines (something I'll be talking about in a future newsletter).

Why ANYONE in their right mind would go through all the trouble of attempting to get a perfectly working of DVD XCopy on their PC is beyond me. I have Xpress sitting on my desktop but I haven't used it in the last 10 months (he, he, had to count back to see when last it was used)

    Peace to all -

I don't own a copy of DVD X Copy and never have (but apparently you do) or for that matter anything else marketed by 321 studios. The posts that I put up were from the web demonstrating that there are problems with Intel's application accelerator. Nothing in my previous post was written by me it was all copy and pasted post by others from various forums. Trust me Scuba I am in my right mind and I won't be so rude as to call you down because I disagree with you. The information that was in my post has helped numerous people in other forums. I realize that it's difficult to understand how something that doesn't affect you might affect others because you have no experience to fall back on, but you should just disregard it because it didn't happen to you. If anything in this post sounds rude then excuse me.

Your post insinuates that I have no knowledge or experience than that which I find around the confines of my own home and from my wheelchair. You suggest that any advice I offer here is limited to what I have personally experienced.

Let me enlighten you, you pompous ass, you have gone way, way over the edge on this one - I'm on several other forums and have been in this one for more than a year - I research the hell out of everything I post and when I’m incorrect I welcome correction - You, on the other hand, seem to have no experience or knowledge and little or no grasp for what has gone here in this thread -

Tubing, who started this thread, replied to your question about a recently installed AA -

But you, without engaging anything you might have for a brain just blundered right on -

I suppose we should have stopped you there as it had absolutely no bearing at all to the thread or to tubing's problem - BUT you were on a roll - whether we liked it or not -

What this had to do with the thread no one knows - Were the "Cut" and "Paste" writers identified to see what their credentials they had ? NOT ! and as for you,

Yet you saw fit to post things about which you had NO EXPERIENCE with at all. (you couldn't see the humor of someone trying to run 321 products and Nero) You don't seem to grasp the fact that those here are a bit farther down the developmental road than those that authored your posts. We don't use 321 products because there is soooo much wrong with them that I don't have the typing stamina to go into all the reasons - I can't let the intelligence and experience of your authors go though - Author # 1 feels that his beloved XCopy will probably burn "Band of Brothers." if he uninstalls his AA -RIGHT ! Like those two are tied together - He'll backup "Band of Brothers" when he graduates from DVD XCopy to a FREE version of DVD Shrink - (Idiot)

Author # 2 - I question anyone putting the importance of a CD burner over a DVD burner - when you backup a DVD, your PC works harder than at any other time - You can fry CD's all day long while printing out labels or even playing a DVD or two, try that while burning an ISO image to disc with DVD Decrypter -

And your point is what ? You weren't trying to help anyone - you posted things written by people who weren't informed -
You, yourself have ZERO experience and ZERO knowledge of what you were setting forth to prove your point (which wasn't proved) wasn't needed and had no place here - and you, ya twerp question me ??

When you want to take me on, come back with a little training and at the minimum at least a provable fact or two -

Naaaahhh, you were way more than Rude and I won't excuse you -

    Sit on them apples -

    Pete

I've been building computers since 96 and can claim more than 100, all high-end. If you think that my post was insinuating that you don't know anything then read it again because that is something I would never do. It only states that because you weren't experiencing a particular problem doesn't mean that others aren't, which was clearly stated in your reply to my orignal response post. If however you feel that I was in fact insulting you then for that I apologize, however stating that I was out of my mind was clearly intended to be an insult. while its true that I don't own a copy of 321 studios software I've tried them, I helped a close friend who was foolish enough to buy it learn to use it. I even tried two back ups of my own DVDs and didn't like it at all, especially the added intro splash screen. I would appreciate it that if you are going to disagree with my posts that you avoid the name calling and put-downs, its that kind of repartee that poisons the well of a good forum. BTW, calling people idiots doesn't make it so anymore than saying it makes you more intelligent.
