Not sure what the problem is

I have not long ago brought a DVDR/RW Rom. Installed it and the software (Nero OEM 6.3.1.26, NeroVision Express 2SE 2.1.2.21, & Nero Media Player 1.4.0.23 )and burnt off a couple of my DVD movies. It worked just fine.

I had to do a fresh install of windows a couple of days ago and when I tried to burn off another DVD movie it got right to the end of the process and came up with this error:

    Unable to burn project
Drive doesnt support changing booktype for DVD-R

So I removed the software and reinstalled it went to burn the same movie again and this time it came up with this error:

NeroVision - Application Error - The instruction at
"0x00615a12" referenced memory at "0x010c56a8". The memory could not be "read".

I have no problems burning off data files onto CDR CDRW DVD-R and DVD+R disks.

Ive been reading up on problems other people have been having with these DVD Drives and alot of them seem to have fixed their errors by updating the firmware.

My Rom is a CyberDrive model DX 162D-A and the firmware is 150F. I went to the site to download the firmware upgrade and found the one that is available there is 130F.

Any Ideas on what I shoud do would be much appreciated

You could check to see if DMA has been turned off on the controller.
    http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking DMA.pdf

Don't know if an oem version of Nero can be updated for free, no harm in trying.

You could also copy and paste the last session from your
    program files/ahead/nero/nerohistory.log

    The last session begins with:

    ====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======

Edit out serial numbers, which begin with 1A20,

and see if any one of more experienced members can assist.

I have checked that DMA is turned on and yes it is BUT it goes like this

    Device 0

    Device Type : Auto Detection
Transfer Mode : DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5

    Device 1

    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2

Shouldnt both devices read exactly the same?

Also sorry I had a log file with the first error but when I uninstalled the software I deleted all the files. The second error came up with a dialog box but did not have a log file.

Sounds O.K. for a HD and a Burner.

You could do a simulation burn with Nero.
A disc in the drive , but no actual burning to the disc.
In Nero Burning ROM, choose the 'burn' tab and check 'simulation'

The log will perhaps show enough information about the drive and conditions during the burn to indicate where the problem lies.

If it won't generate a log file, you should verify that the burner has the latest firmware (which you have) and that you are using top rated media and you have shut down any anti-virus or other processes that are eating up memory.

Nero Info Tool could be run to verify that ASPI is installed and working.

I have checked that aspi is installed and it is. Im about to try to burn the movie off again or atleast try to. It takes awhile so I will post the log file when it is finished.

1 question: In the burn section of the project it has "current progress 1h 57m 14s and total progress 2h 2m 25s.
    Is this a normal reading.

Thanks for your help so far ill check back later.

Sorry, can't help you there.Sounds like your using Nerovision express and I only use Dvdshrink/NeroBurning Rom or Dvd Decrypter.
Hope you at least get a log file.
I started a session with the (deliberately) wrong media and aborted, but still got a log.
Seems to me that almost any time after clicking 'burn', a log should be created, but I shall defer to a senior member.

    @krankyas,
The original problem is somehow your drive is trying to booktype a DVD-R and that can only be done on a DVD+R type media. DVD Dcrypter has a booktyping setting and you just need to know the drive manufacture to change it (it doesn't list all drive manufactures).
BTW i don't think any drive will booktype DVD-R to DVD-ROM.
    Let me see if i can find a link to booktyping and paste it here;
In this thread they are talking about lite-on drives, but the info is the same.
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/243631
Try typing "booktyping" without the quotes in the search function above, and check out the threads. I am sure someone has already walked somebody thru it. I could walk you thru, but i have to run and can't spare the time to it now. To fix your original problem, all you had to do was use a DVD+R disc. To correct the drive to use DVD-R, you have to go in and check the booktype settings for DVD-R for your drive. Decrypter can do it, so can Nero, those 2 i know for sure.
I checked your drives firmware, and the firmware site shows 120F as being the latest. Cybermedia's site is probably the latest version if they list 130F.
Here is what the firmware page shows:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1958
130F is the latest one i could find, and you say you have 150F, 2 versions ahead of the latest? Incorrect firmware flashing can destroy a drive if done improperly, so be careful.
Nero OEM can be updated for free, i did it for mine. It probably wont let you update to Nero 7 for free though.

You say you are using Verbatim on the first log?It shows the manufacturer as 'SKC CO , Ltd', I don't think Verbatim uses that code.

The second burn using AVlabs, is in fact made by 'SKC CO , Ltd' also.

In both cases the drive is not recognizing the media, but then your firmware is up to date, so probably best not to use that brand.

Maybe Verbatim or other quality media would make the problems go away.

You have 255MB memory and 100 MB available.I hope you shut down everything possible before your session starts.

I'm not sure if trying to change the booktype on the media will cause a failure, but have a look at this link, then go into Nero and check booktype. It looks like you have it set on 'ROM'.
You are using DVD-R media which cannot be reset.

When it is set to automatic and you insert a DVD+R disc it will automatically reset it to ROM (if the drive actually supports this feature).

    Anyone else, please jump in.

Well I give up I have the case infront of me and I broke the seal on it and the damn thing says verbatim, As with the other media. no markings of any sort on the media itself only on the cases they came in.
So I take it SKC is no good.
The first log was burnt off on a DVD-R disk as with the second.
Ok I just finished burning it off again. This time I used a DVD+R SKC disk and it copied fine.
For what its worth and I dont know if it has any thing to do with this problem I'm having.
Apart from all 3 being burnt on 3 SUPPOSEDLY different media, the first and last attemps which worked I animated the buttons and left it set at the 10s default.
The one that failed I tried to get the buttons to animate for 180s
Thanks for all the help guys I still have no Idea what is happening with my ROM but I have learnt alot about things I had no idea about (lol)

the other guys' replies are on the money there, i'll just summarise and add any other bits i see.. ps Verbatim get my vote.

    - first of all, i can't see any Nerovision-related errors in the logs at all, just non-Nerovision-specific stuff, ie one of your main problems was the dodgy SKC media. However your Nerovision is quite old, latest (well prior to Nero 7 coming out anyway) is 3.1.0.16

    - latest (well prior to Nero 7 coming out) is 6.6.0.16

    - from a little digging i 'think' this is a Cyberdrive, though the newest firmware i can find is 120F. I guess your firmware's fine..
edit - didn't see you'd mentioned it was a Cyberdrive, i always go straight to the logfiles, then see how the problem was descibed, after that..

    - the other guys summarised this

    - the other guys summarised this

    - crap SKC media at fault here :~)

Thank you very much for all your help guys.
I have chucked all the SKC and AVLabs disks and will now use Verbatim only.
Since it takes so long to transcode and burn a backup of movie's it pays to get the media right the first time (lol).
Once again thanks for all your help.
