Like most people I am short of hard disc space so decided to offload some onto DVD+R disk at 4.7gb. So far so good, it seems to take what I give it, either music, film or data. I thought I would be ambitious and save larger files onto some Traxdata DVD+RDL 8.5gb discs. Problem, my writer via Nero doesn't seem to recognise the disk. When I go to burn it it shows as Please insert an empty disc to write to ... (I have) Disc required for the compilation DVD R/RW, DVD+R DL (It is) Disc type in the recorder (Empty) (No it isn't) Any ideas please.
What's the make and model of your drive? May just need a firmware update. Try usimg ImgBurn instead for dual layer discs. It's a good free burner. Use the build mode to add and burn the files.
The burner came with the machine, a Dell Dimension 5150. I have had a quick look at imgburn and give it a try and see how it goes, thanks
Go to this link to see which firmware is available for your 5150 Dimension. Scroll down to the CD/DVD (9) and click on the "+". There are 3 different DVD burners listed so you will need to know which 1 you have. Is this the first time you've tried to use DL discs?
Yes this is the first time I have tried DVD+R DL discs. According to the device manager I have 2 DVD devices. HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B SONY DVD-ROM DDU1615 which I guess is the read only drive D
And the HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B is not listed on Dell's site as having a update for it. Found firmware for it here. You would need to know what your current firmware is first to see if you need to update. An easy way is to start Nero CD/DVD Speed. Use the dropdown arrow at the to to get the correct drive. It will also list the firmware revision at the end. How old is the Dell and did you get it new? We'll probably want you to post an entire log from Nero, it could lead us to more suggestions for you to try.
The Dell was bought new in about July 2006, about the same time as the firmware is showing the last update I don't know how to download a log so I will need some help there.

In the end it must just be better to pick up some Verbatim DL - they are more supported by the different drives firmware then some of the newer players in the DL market.
I don't have the log from an earlier effort. However here is one I just made. I used a mix of word documents, jpeg files and movie and it rejected it as shown below. I see it shows aborted by used which is not correct. In the meantime I have ordered some Verbatim discs and will see if they are any good. In the meantime any answers on how to get these Traxdata ones going would be welcome. Ok from what I can find you have the latest firmware on the drive. So you may do better with the Verbs which are better supported. See if Nero Tools will even identify the Traxdata. Pop one in the drive then in SmartStart under Tools click on cd-dvd speed. Click on the disc info tab. The 2nd log it's looks like Nero choking on the avi you're trying to convert. Update Nero to the latest - 7.10.1.0. File 'Drivers\InCDfs.SYS': Nero's InCD can sometimes cause problems so if you're not using it uninstall it and run the clean tool
I tried using the Tools on Smartstart, unfirtunately it only gave me the choice of 2 Nero Product setup or Nero imagedrive (which is apparently diabled.Nothing about the speed. I unistall incd and ran the clean tool. I tried burning again, and got past the error stage but then we are back to the failing to recognise the larger disc. I will hang on until the Verbatim ones arrive and see how we go then. Thanks, so far
Hmmm you should have the other options in Tools unless maybe you have Essentials (Nero came with a burner or the pc) or you did a custom install and didn't install all of tools (?) Probably won't do much good since the drive doesn't recognize them via Nero but here's a free program to identify media - dvd identifer Keep us posted on how the Verbs do.
Well I am pleased to say the Verbatim discs were accepted by Nero straight away and I have been happily copying some of my stuff off the main hard dsic. Thanks for the assistance, I know which ones to buy next time. Incidentally re the disc id I did a straightforward Nero installation, I am not clever enough to anything fancy like a custom one. Anyway, seem to be over the problem now.
Great to hear it beevee that you are up and burning with the Verbs. I'd still like to see what those Traxdata DVD+R DLs code out as. You can still try binkie7's directions to try: "See if Nero Tools will even identify the Traxdata. Pop one in the drive then in SmartStart under Tools click on cd-dvd speed. Click on the disc info tab. " I wonder if there is a new code out there?
I can't access tools on Nero, all I can get is Product Setup, Imagedrive, and now, after installing the latest updates Nero Scout. I have always done the standard install as I don't know how to do a custom one so as far as I can see I have the full package, but it now appears I don't. Somebody earlier recommended Imgburn which I have had a look at and it recognises the Traxdata disc. Can I get the info you want off that, what sort of thing am I actually looking for (simple language please)
To find out the manufacturer w/ ImgBurn just pop a blank in the drive. Then open ImgBurn and the disc info will be displayed in the right hand screen. All modes but 'build' will list this info so if you don't see in the toolbar click on mode and switch it to say write.
Not doing too well here. Switched on Imgburn as instructed but the right hand side of the screen shows no information whatsover about the disc in the drive. The Log found 1 DVD-ROM and 1 DVD + - RW but no info about the Traxdata disc. Just to be sure I slipped in a Verbatim one and it showed all sorts of info about the disc. Don't know what to do now, quite happy with Verbatim as they work, but the Traxdata ones seem to be dud. Perhaps I will put those down to experience. Sorry I can't help you anymore.
No worries - looks like whoever made these Traxdata discs - they're not supported by the drives firmware - reason ImgBurn can't id them also. So even using ImgBurn these might fail too.
Hi guys, I found a compatability guide for those Traxdata DLs here. It looks like they are Ritek or RicohJPN, possibly the Ritek D03 or the RicohJPN D01. I've used the Ritek S03s (the only other +R DL listdd) with medocure results (had big problems with the layer break). I haven't encountered the Ritek D03 code or the RicohJPN D01 but am suspecting that beevee has the Ritek D03. It seems to be the newest code. I don't know how to check my firmware to see if those codes are supported. Do you binkie7???
There was a tool/utility posted at cdfreaks one time that extracted the data but I never really looked into or tried it. Not even sure what it's called or what drives (if that made a diff) were supported. Videohelp lists these id codes also for the Traxdata - link edit: spelling
