I'm really frustrated! All I want to do is to take a VOB file that I ripped with SmartRipper and convert it to a movie file(AVI, MPEG, etc...) I tried many programs (TMPGEnc, VirtualDUB, VirtualDUBMod, FlaskMPEG). They all came up with lame error messages(or excuses).

    TMPGEnc- doesn't take VOB files
    VirtualDUB- can't find video frames
VirtualDUBMod- converts a 100 MB VOB file to 3 GB AVI file.
FlaskMPEG- takes 35 hours to convert a 20 minute clip

No offense, but even the guides here aren't as much help. These are just.....(can't find the word). So, how did you guys convert VOB to MPEG, AVI, WMV, etc... ?

Download the XviD codec. Install it.
    Open the vob in virtualdubmod.
Select video, compression, and select Xvid.
    Click File, save avi.

Too much HD room would be needed (2 DVDs - about 10-15 GB - : the VOB set and the Xvid 'huge' file, to avoid loss of quality).
As written in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc.cfm and http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2svcd_with_tmpgenc.cfm , download DVD2AVI (proper version) and configure it (copying it also in TMPGenc's directory; if the Environmantal Settings of TMPGenc aren't wrong made it's very easy to do it) to enable TMPGenc loading the VOBs.
Once you made .VOB -> .MPG , making an .AVI is trivial.

Ah, if Smartriper cannot manage to rip special and very well protected DVDs (its development stopped some year ago), try using DVD Decrypter, to make DVD -> VOB, instead.

I use "Virtual-Dub-Mpeg-2" with the "AC3ACM decompressor" Installed and it Loads VOB files no problem and encodes them to any AVI format you have Codecs for...
One problem with it (To me it isn"t a Problem) is that if the VOB files are NTSC and Made from a Film Source then V-Dub-Mpeg2 will disregard the 3:2 Pulldown Flags and Read the File as Being 23.976fps and Progressive....

Minion gived a very good suggestion, but just take care: if you're planning to make an aprox. 700-800 MB AVI, you'll have a much better quality by compressing a 352x240(288) movie than by compressing a 720x420(576) movie....
