You had better hope that it is a hoax.

I would think that the first thing that you would do is call your ISP and ask them if they had actually received the supoena, involving you. If they have, then they haven't received that supoena for no reason, and you will need an attorney.

And, if it is true, whatever you do, don't post in any forum what you did to have your ISP get that supoena.

Since when could be subpoened by E-Mail?, in the UK you have to be handed it in PERSON only, or it is not valid. There would be great difficulties in proving that you have received it, therein lies an extremely good defence. As how could they prove that nobody else could access your E-mail account?
What is next, speeding tickets by E-mail? How can they tie your E-mail address to your ISP? Obtaining your ISP is easy if you know how. Obtaining you E-mail address is easy too. Marrying the 2 is more difficult. The burden of proof, for them, is too overwhelming. I.E. it would be very difficult to prove the 2 together. Unless they have secretly installed a key logger on your PC! They could only prove that you access Yahoo, Lycos (or wherever your account is held) Due to encryption techniques they could not prove which E-Mail account that you have accessed.

I do not think that this is legit.

Here is a link to their (real) address

I would ring the REAL company & ask them.

Thanks for the replies..... I called my isp and told them I was trying to find out what the deal was with me getting a email from them regarding a notice of subpoena. She asked for my email password so she could look at the email herself so I gave it to her. She told me to hold while she talked with her supervisor and when she came back her supervisor said that if I didn't know what it was concerning that they the isp would disregard that email. Isp didn't say yes or no if they knew anything of this. I just hope I didn't stir anything up by me calling.

Pulsar, dss3m did not receive a supoena by e-mail. He received an e-mail stating that his ISP had received one.

@Pulsar: I can see where you would have thought that he received the sopeona, and that he received it by e-mail. You aren't a dumb ass.

I find it thought provoking that your ISP asked for your password to view the e-mail when you could just have forwarded it to them. For your own security I hope that you are thinking about changing your password.

    @GrandPaBW
If pulsar says he's a dumb**s then I think you should do the gentlemanly thing and oblige him by concurring :). I've seen a couple of his postings and .....

    @ Pulsar
I am only kidding :). I have a great deal of respect for your postings. I have personally benefited from them. I sincerely hope that you have a very healthy sense of humor or I'll be apologizing for a long time to come.

After I got off the phone I did change my password. Even though ISP has all passwords I still changed it.

@ Jamzbond, I have a VERY healthy sense of humour. It is nice to know that at least one person has gleaned knowledge from my often inane ramblings!
I have to hold back sometimes 'cos people can take offence over the internet. Usually as they cannot see your face whilst posting/typing/talking! I specialise in satire/sarcasm. I learnt it in my apprenticeship as a Mechanical Engineer, it was part of the job description.

Whew!!. That a relief. I have learnt that concommittant with any specialized training in any field of expertise is a PHd in Diplomacy. BTW, Diplomacy is defined as the ability to tell someone to go to h*ll in such a way, that they actually look forward to the trip :~)

dss3m, I received the same e-mail and today received a package via FedEx from a lawfirm representing Fox Films and some other movie companies. The letter said that if i didnt not contact them within 10 days to try and reach a settlement they will assume i "have no interest in settlement and will pursue litigation." I have no idea what to do, if anyone has any advice i'll be more than happy to hear.if you figure out a way to resolve this please let me know, and if i do i will post is ASAP.

    -Thanks

How long has it been between you receiving the email and the fedex letter? And again you got the exact same letter? Are you a bellsouth isp customer also? Have you contacted bellsouth? I did and they told me that they would disregard the notice. How true that is I don't know. One more thing if they were trying to send you a certified letter it should have come through united states postal service not fedex.

I recieved the letter today, it wasnt from bellsouth, it was from a law firm in california saying they were going to pursue litigation if I did not call them within 10 days to settle the claim. I received the same e-mail you did on the 6th also, the case number is the same as well. I did not even know I had the e-mail from bellsouth until today because i rarely check my bellsouth e-mail. I tried to contact the law firm today with the number that was on the letter i received but all i got was a message telling me to leave my name and number and that they would call be back as soon as possible.

I suggest that you alter your post that included your email address. Your are setting yourself up for a deluge of spam. Instead use the private message function to communicate with Dss3m. I hope that this is just a hoax, but you have to assume its not until you get to the bottom of it. Best of luck to both of you.
