I just bought myself a Medion Pentium 4 2.4 GHz. It has two DVD rom drives, a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105 and a Sony DVD-ROM DDU 1612. The problem I'm having is that when you press the button to open the lid and to have the tray come out, the other DVD drive opens. Sometimes it doesn't even open, it slides in and out real fast. And the burner opens up every time you restart the PC. Sometimes one button seems unresponsive, sometimes it does not. I thought it might be the buttons but when I get the PC to eject a particular drive, the same thing happens. I'm thinking that it needs a ribbon cable replaced. The only thing I did to it was set my old drive as slave (by "borrowing" the cable and power from the DVD-ROM) so I could transfer my files to the new hard drive. Then I put the cable and power connector back as it was. Otherwise, I touched nothing. I don't see how I could've hurt anything, since I was very careful and wore ESD protection. I don't believe it is that sensitive; the ribbon cable seemed pretty bent up when I first opened the PC. Any ideas? -Hal.
The drive might be mounted incorrectly. Had it happen to me with a Dell 8200, which has those nice brackets that allow you to mount and unmount drives quickly and easily. Try setting the drive a little further back as the button to the drive might be pressing up against something. Just my 2 cents.
I'm not sure that's the problem, since as I stated earlier, the same thing happens when I eject it through the OS (My Computer). Also, that doesn't explain why the lid to the burner comes open during bootup. -Hal.
Actually, cancel that. When I try to open the drives through My Computer, they work fine. Closing them is a problem though. It takes a couple tries before they close back up. I'll have to call Medion and see what they think. -Hal. Edit: Spoke too soon. When I tried to eject the DVD ROM through My Computer it went in and out really fast.
