Right I installed virtual dub last night because I had some videos I wanted to slice up and compress. So I try to open one and it tells me there's no VFW etc. I found this forum and followed the codec guide - that fixed the problem. Then when I went back to WMP I got an error telling me (and this is from memory so forgive me if it's not word for word) 3rd party plugins had been disabled, possibly due to wmp not shutting down properly, possibly because there was an error with the codecs. However the videos still played. So I figured it would be fine. I went back to virtual dub but whenever I used anything but direct stream from the video I got extremely jerky video. So I thought I'd uninstall the codecs. I started to do this and then everything went wrong. Now the video won't even play smoothly in wmp. It jerks around. I found this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/81570 this morning and plan to have a go with that when I get home. Question is, do I just search for these files and delete them? I'm scared of making it worse. Please if anyone can give any help I'd appreciate it.
Ok that's made it even worse. Now as well as being jerky it's really dark. Does anyone have any idea how I could fix this issue?
did you have any kind of "Codec Pack" installed? You could try this if not. Sometimes codec packs create more problems than they solve, but I have had great success with the K lite codecs. You can find it here on this site: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/k-lite_codec_pack_full.cfm You could install it, and see if it helps. And if it doesn't, it has an "uninstall" option. So no harm done.
I've got the video playing again through wmp. After deleting all the codecs I could find using the link above I then reinstalled the DivX play codec from the divX site. That's got the ones in question working at least. Thing is, and I don't know whether this is a result of getting rid of the microsoft ones but I use msn messenger a lot, with "what I'm listening to now" switched on. It was working fine 2 days ago, now I've got rid of all codecs it's not working. I might try adding the microsoft codecs again. It's funny you should say that ugc. I used to have that very pack installed on my old setup. It worked like a charm except some videos would be obscured by very bright colours. However I did learn to live with that. At least I had most videos working and vdub too. I might give it a go. Thanks.
