Ok, I'm an idiot. I do not know and cannot figure out what the hell branded, unbranded, coated and all of the other dvd-r terms mean.

Is branded good? Is unbranded good? What about coating?

I have silver ritek dvd-r's with a dark purple bottom. Is this good? Will they last?

Yes if you look after Ritek they will last for a long time...

    I use them discs aswell.

Branded would be something made by Pioneer , Sony etc
Un-Branded (especially when it comes to blank media) could be made by someone like Nan-Ya

I have some Datasafe Classic X2 DVD-R's that have a double coating protection , I found them to be a good disc.

As Herbsman says it is what it sounds like. Branded - it has a brand name. Unbranded - it doesnt have a brand name. Coated are special protection layers on some discs. THey are not really needed though.
